To my friends and family within the histio community, I am coming to you today to share my difficult decision to step down from my role as Executive Director for the Histiocytosis Association. The last 5 plus years working directly for the Association have been the most rewarding years of my life and I have had the blessing of meeting so many of you in person, online, on calls, or through email. When I joined the Histiocytosis community through my own LCH journey, I had always hoped to be involved and that will never waiver. I will always stand firmly behind the mission and vision of the Histiocytosis Association, the staff, the Board, and all of you. The Histiocytosis Association Board is actively seeking a new Executive Director and to support this search, has engaged an executive search firm. Together, they will identify and recruit the ideal candidate to lead the Association into its next chapter. While I will transition out of this role at the close of the month, I will remain committed to supporting the team and Board over the next several months, including aiding the onboarding of new leadership. In the meantime, the staff at the Histiocytosis Association are well equipped to continue supporting this community. And our support calls will be left in the capable hands of Doris Dahdouh and Renee Christensen, who already lead many of the calls. This community was shepherded by Jeff Toughill before me, and I KNOW it will continue until we find the cures and treatments necessary for each disorder after me. And it will ALWAYS be here to support you. After being diagnosed with cancer back in December the future was uncertain and we didn’t know what to expect! We are so so grateful to his oncology team for providing him the best care. He remains happy and that’s all we can ask for. He spent the day getting pets, a bath, checking on his grand babies, socializing and also even doing a little agility (his favorite)! I wish I could say that I have accepted all the conditions my son has as quick as it was shown on this reel, truth is I’m still mourning. I cry over the inability I have to make it all go away and protect him from struggles. I have become to understand that, we need those struggles, not because we have done something wrong or because we’re being punished, but because it’s making us better. I wish I could say that I am grateful for them but I can’t, I still feel anger and hopelessness . But I have learn to appreciate more the little adjustments we had to make, such as, repeating certain things over and over again for Logan to understand, the quietness we have during chemo appointments, the relief when he finishes his week of daily medicines without any side effects, or when he says a new word (the happiness and excitement we feel when that happens is out of this world)… Ps. 1- I do run in place or shake my legs and arms when something scares me. 2- Logan is currently going through testing to officially diagnose him with autism. Part 2: This was recorded the same day I posted my last reel but a few hours later. When I went to hot compress and clean the histiocytoma, which had presented as inflamed and bright red/purple at the top earlier in the day, it was leaking some blood so I had to allow that to drain what it needed to prior to any additional treatment. I used a clean paper towel to blot the fluids, and applied very gentle pressure to allow it to drain (again, it was already draining without any pressure added). Ember had been rolling in the snow earlier and the pressure on top of the inflammation likely just allowed the draining of the excess fluid to start. • Though they are soft growths that look like they could just be drained, histiocytomas are actually a skin tumor that are fairly common and often benign, some even go away on their own. • This is just our own experience with this particular growth, which has been monitored and aspirated since it first appeared in August 2018 and is not meant as medical guidance or advice. Please contact your veterinarian with any concerns and see my last reel for more details and tips for monitoring growths. • Please feel free to share, but no reposts without permission for this or any other content. 🌟 September is Histio Awareness Month! 🌟 This month we’re shining a light on Histio, a group of rare diseases where the body makes too many white blood cells called histiocytes. One type, Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), can affect skin, bones, and organs. It’s often compared to cancer because of the way it behaves, but it’s its own unique condition: rare, misunderstood, and in need of more awareness and research. For us, this month hits close to home. Our sweet Lola was just 8 months when doctors suspected she might have LCH. Those weeks of waiting were filled with fear and unknowns and in many ways, we’re still on that road today. Lola is still fighting LCH, and while she’s smiling, growing, and filling our days with light, the truth is there are still many unknowns ahead for her and for us. That’s why awareness matters so much. More awareness brings more research, and more research brings better answers and brighter futures for kids like Lola. #LCH #histiowarrior #histiocytosisawareness #lchawareness #motherhood #motherhoodunplugged
