HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?! Something the universe was never supposed to show us… new Hubble photographhas revealed Interstellar Object 31 ATLASwith a shape that defies everything scientists expected Not round. Not flat. Not normal. This mysterious object looks unnatural, stretched, and completely unrecognizable raising one shocking question: Was this formed by nature… or something we don’t yet understand? Traveling from outside our solar system, 31 ATLAS is forcing astronomers to rewrite what they know about interstellar objects The universe just proved again — we know far less than we think.** #NASA #HubbleTelescope #SpaceDiscovery #InterstellarObject #USAScience

New discovery in dark matter. This is the most detailed map of dark matter we’ve ever made. It makes up 27% of our universe but we don’t really understand it because it’s INVISIBLE! This shows the previous map we had made with the Hubble telescope in 2007 and the new map, made by Webb. Clearer pictures of this mysterious matter help us understand it! In 1923, when Edwin Hubble showed that the faint spiral in the sky known as Andromeda was an entire galaxy beyond our own, humanity’s sense of the universe expanded dramatically. It meant the Milky Way was not the whole cosmos. Our galaxy itself spans about one hundred thousand light-years and contains hundreds of billions of stars. Yet it is only one among hundreds of billions of galaxies scattered across the observable universe, each carrying its own vast population of suns, planets, and cosmic structures. Distance stretches beyond ordinary comprehension. Light, the fastest thing in nature, takes millions or even billions of years to travel between these islands of stars. The deeper we look into space, the larger the universe becomes, revealing layers of structure extending far beyond the limits of our everyday imagination. A cosmos built on staggering scale. And in the video, Brian Cox reflects on this immense perspective, explaining how the true scale of the universe reshapes our understanding of distance, time, and our place within it. Galaxies: Building Blocks of the Universe This montage highlights the main galaxy types in Edwin Hubble’s 1926 tuning-fork classification: • Ellipticals — smooth, featureless systems dominated by old stars • Spirals — rotating disks with winding arms and active star formation • Lenticulars (S0) — transitional galaxies bridging ellipticals and spirals • Irregulars — chaotic structures rich in star-forming regions These forms reveal billions of years of cosmic evolution shaped by gravity, mergers, and gas dynamics. Journey through Caldwell 51, a faint galaxy about 2.3 million light-years away. Hubble captured ultraviolet, infrared, and visible-light observations of C51, in order to learn more about its chemical composition. Since most elements in the universe are formed by stars and distributed into their galaxy when the stars die, this information can help researchers learn more about the evolution of the galaxy and its star formation history. In 1989, astronomers mapping the universe on its largest scales uncovered something unexpected. Galaxies were not scattered randomly through space. Instead, they were arranged in vast filaments and walls, stretching across unimaginable distances. One of these discoveries became known as a “great wall” of galaxies, a colossal structure made of thousands of galaxies bound together by gravity, extending hundreds of millions of light-years across space. Each galaxy inside it holds billions of stars, yet together they form something even larger than anyone thought possible. On these scales, the universe looks less like empty darkness and more like a cosmic web. Immense voids lie between the walls, while light takes hundreds of millions of years to cross from one side to the other. These structures challenge our sense of size. They exist on the edge of what we can comprehend, where individual galaxies become tiny dots inside something far greater.

Hubble has uncovered a new type of astronomical object 🌌 A starless, gas-rich, dark-matter cloud that is considered a ‘relic’ or remnant of early galaxy formation. Nicknamed ‘Cloud-9,’ this is the first confirmed detection of such an object in the Universe. For years, scientists have been looking for evidence of such a phantom object, which was proposed in theory. But only when they turned Hubble toward the cloud were they able to confirm that it is indeed starless. The object is called a Reionization-Limited H I Cloud, or ‘RELHIC.’ The term ‘H I’ refers to neutral hydrogen, and ‘RELHIC’ describes a natal hydrogen cloud from the Universe’s early days, a fossil leftover that has not formed stars RELHICs are thought to be dark matter clouds that were not able to accumulate enough gas to form stars. Cloud-9 suggests the existence of many other small, dark matter-dominated structures in the Universe – other failed galaxies. This discovery provides new insights into the dark components of the Universe that are difficult to study through traditional observations, which focus on bright objects like stars and galaxies. 🎞️ / 📸 @nasa, ESA. Look how far we’ve come🫶 From the groundbreaking views of the Hubble Space Telescope to the unprecedented clarity of the James Webb Space Telescope, our window into the cosmos has transformed dramatically. Hubble revealed breathtaking nebulae, distant galaxies, and iconic structures like the Pillars of Creation, forever changing how humanity sees the universe. Now Webb is pushing even further—peering through cosmic dust, uncovering newborn stars, and capturing ancient galaxies from the earliest chapters of cosmic history. The universe hasn’t changed much. Our ability to see it has. #astronomy #space #nasa #stars #fyp
