If you’ve been diagnosed with IBS 👇 You were probably told that it’s a chronic condition that can’t be cured, try the low FODMAP diet to manage your symptoms and just work on lowering your stress. What you’ve been told is entirely incorrect and frankly, lazy medicine. IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, they tell you that you have IBS when they have excluded everything else and don’t know what to do with you. IBS isn’t actually a disease or condition. IBS is a collection of symptoms that are being CAUSED by something else. Some of the most common root causes of IBS are: → Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) → Autoimmunity to the gut cells caused by food poisoning → Undiagnosed food intolerances → Gut dysbiosis The good news is that when we find what your specific root cause is, we can use targeted supplementation + diet/lifestyle changes to correct these imbalances to fix your symptoms for good. IBS happens due to overly sensitized gut nerves, often triggered by a prior infection, antibiotic use, or surgery. Stress can make symptoms worse, but it’s rarely the root cause. This is why antidepressants help IBS—not because they treat anxiety, but because they act as neuromodulators, changing how the gut and brain process pain. They also help regulate bowel movements. Here are certain foods that can trigger discomfort and chaos in your digestive system 👉🏻Beans, lentils, and peas are generally a great source of protein and fiber, but they can cause IBS symptoms as they contain oligosaccharides. 👉🏻Carbonated drinks have a stimulating effect on the intestines and can cause diarrhea 👉🏻Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli/cauliflower/cabbage/brussels sprouts) are also high fibre and may trigger IBS symptoms. 👉🏻Garlic and onions contain fructans, an oligosaccharide, which can be difficult for your intestines to break down. This may cause gas. 👉🏻Consumption of spicy foods has shown that chili, with its pungent ingredient, capsaicin, exacerbates abdominal pain and burning in IBS patients.
