This morning I was asked to say a few words at a function held to honour the staff at Embizweni High School in Umlazi, for helping their 2022 matric learners achieve an 82.66% pass rate. ILM-SA funded the function through donations we received for this purpose and each staff member received a certificate and a personalized keyring, and a meal was also provided for them. This is a severely underresourced school and there are no auditoriums or multi purpose centres here. The function was held in a classroom (no air-conditioning or fan), with the name of function written in chalk on the blackboard. Yet there was hearty laughter and good spirits all around at the function, as well as when we entered the school - the learners who come from homes where three meals a day is a luxury were dancing away in celebration of break up day. I hope you will join us all on an outing to the school after Ramadaan, to establish how we can assist more than we currently assist. Sunday marked the Muslimah Today 2025 Conference — an inspiring annual event hosted by Ilm for Women, a division of Ilm SA. I’ve had the privilege of attending this gathering since its early days, when it was first held at UDW and I was invited by Fatima Asmal to come on board as a media affiliate. Over the years, I’ve watched it grow into something remarkable — from intimate beginnings to a larger venue, a bigger audience, and even live broadcasts. Yet despite its growth, the essence has remained unchanged: creating a space that brings women from all walks of life together. Every year, the programme offers powerful reminders, insightful discussions, and thought-provoking talks. This year’s line-up was no exception: 🌿 Ruqayya Paruk’s moving recitation set the tone with beauty and depth. 🌿 Na’ima B. Robert’s heartfelt words left many in tears as she shared with openness and vulnerability. 🌿 Farzanah Adam reminded us of the strength, wisdom, and pivotal roles of the women of Islam. 🌿 Hannah Qannan reframed the way we view the people of Palestine — their resilience, faith, and unshakable loyalty. 🌿 Raeesa Aboobaker gently reminded us to pause, acknowledge burnout, and give our bodies and minds the rest they need. 🌿 And finally, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman of Gift of the Givers shared invaluable insight into the milestones of their journey, reminding us that he is but a tool in the Almighty’s greater work — a humbling, powerful perspective. My takeaways from Muslimah Today 2025: There is always something to be grateful for. With hardship comes ease. Each of us is tested in different ways. We will never be tested beyond what we can bear. Gratitude keeps us grounded and prevents us from falling into ingratitude. The pain of loss is real and unique for everyone — grieving should never be dismissed — but life must go on, and those around us still need us. Our bodies are a trust. Listen to them, allow them to rest, and nurture mind, body, and soul. Muslimah Today 2025 was more than just a conference. It was a reminder, a recharge, and a gathering of hearts — rooted in faith, resilience, and gratitude. #shireenm #mt2025 #muslimahtoday2025 #ilmsa

This is a video in which a little boy attending one of the various rural/township madrasahs ILM-SA assists is sharing the seven articles of Imaan, as taught to him by his Aapa. In sha Allah us sharing this video does not equate to "poverty porn," as it is termed by critics in reference to charities sharing photographs and videos of their beneficiaries. Rather it is to show you what you, the donor, is helping us to achieve by supporting us. Also, we are amazed at the work that this elderly Aapa is doing, using only textbooks, and felt inclined to share it.
