With a computer program called MOANA and NASA satellite data, scientists can identify the colorful plant-like organisms that drift in Atlantic Ocean currents. These phytoplankton nourish Earth's marine life, produce oxygen, absorb carbon, and turn satellite images into vibrant works of art. The first image, taken by NASA's Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite on May 16, 2025, shows the natural color of phytoplankton blooming in the nutrient-rich waters off the coast of Namibia. While each individual phytoplankton is microscopic, blooms of billions can be seen swirling in shades of greens and blues from orbit. Different species appear as different colors, and PACE detects the entire spectrum. By putting PACE color data into a computer program called Multi Ordination Analysis - the MOANA of this ocean tale - scientists can create maps where three different types of phytoplankton are thriving. The second image dives into the data to map the different communities in teal and purple. This helps provide insights into the health of schools of fish and other ocean life. Including, perhaps, how far they'll go.Image description: Two satellite images show the same portion of the Atlantic Ocean and the southwestern coast of Africa. In the first natural-color image, the left side is dark blue, with swirls of greens increasing toward the center of the image as the ocean meets the coastline. To the right of the first image, white clouds form dotted, curved lines over the tan and brown land. The second image maps data on phytoplankton communities over the ocean, with different communities identified in teals and purples. The land and clouds look the same as in the first image. Why is sea level rising? 🌊 Global sea levels are rising as a result of human-caused global warming, with recent rates being unprecedented over the past 2,500-plus years. @nasajpl's sea level rise expert Ben Hamlington explains how our warming planet is causing sea levels to rise. What. A. Week. @NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover found an intriguing rock and, with it, the possibility of ancient microbial life. What’s next for this special rock? Perseverance has zapped it with lasers and X-rays and will store a core sample for retrieval by a future mission. In the meantime, its data will be made available for investigation by the scientific community! #NASA #JPL #DareMightyThings #Mars #Exploration #MarsRover #Geology 📸 Image Description: A GIF of a selfie that the NASA Perseverance Mars rover took of itself as it stood next to its workspace - a rock named “Cheyava Falls.” The rover’s head turns to look down at the rock and then back up again at the camera as if it is looking at the rock and then looking again at the viewer. The rover looks quite large and stoic, amongst other rocks and pebbles.

How can technology make the impossible possible? It’s the 10th anniversary of LACMA Art + Technology Lab, which supports artists across fields and interests with grants up to $50,000. Applicants can be based anywhere in the world, and proposed projects can exist in physical or virtual environments. Applicants do not need previous experience with technology; instead, they should be actively considering how technology can expand their practice. Artists are encouraged to think beyond the confines of traditional exhibitions and leave room for refinement from technologists and the museum. The Lab is part of the Hyundai Project: Art + Technology at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (@LACMA), a joint initiative exploring the convergence of art and technology. The application deadline is February 22, 2023 by 11:59 pm PT. Visit our bio to apply. [Image Description: A 3D rendered green flyer floats in a black background.]

ICYMI: Earth’s sea ice reached a new low in 2025. 🌊🧊 Every year, sea ice cover in the Arctic grows in the dark and cold of the Northern Hemisphere winter, reaching its annual peak. Arctic sea ice hit its peak on March 22, 2025 at 5.53 million square miles (14.33 million square kilometers), making it the lowest annual peak on record. In the Antarctic, sea ice melts during the Southern Hemisphere summer to its annual minimum extent. This year, Antarctic sea ice retreated to 764,000 square miles (1.98 million square kilometers) on March 1, tying for the second lowest minimum extent ever recorded. The loss of ice in both polar regions has led to another milestone — the total amount of sea ice on Earth reached a new record low this year, according to @nasa and @nsidcnews. Image description: Graph showing sea ice extent in millions of kilometers in 2025. Purple lines show Antarctic sea ice. It dips and hits an annual low around February and March, then rises to hit a peak around September and October. A green line shows Arctic sea ice, which peaks around March and dips around September to October. At the top is a group of blue lines showing global total sea ice, which dips around March and has two peaks around June and November. Lighter color lines show more recent years, which are much lower than the older, darker years for each of the lines. #Earth #NASA #Ice #SeaIce #Arctic #Antarctica #Climate #Science #Data

The Moon is currently waxing, and will be full on June 3. This data visualization based on images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter shows how the Moon always keeps the same face toward Earth, but not EXACTLY the same face. Because of the tilt and shape of its orbit, we see the Moon from slightly different angles over the course of a month. When a month is compressed into a few seconds, our changing view of the Moon makes it look like it’s wobbling. This wobble is called libration. You can learn more, and see the full animation that shows all of the Moon’s phases for 2023, hour by hour, at the link in our bio. #NASA #space #science #nature #moon #fullmoon Image description: An animation shows the Moon against a dark background, its cratered face under continually changing illumination conditions as it goes through a complete cycle of phases, from about three-quarters illuminated, to full, and back again. The apparent size and orientation of the Moon changes somewhat throughout the animation, causing it to appear to wobble.

Is polar ice melting? Unfortunately, yes. And it’s the number one contributor to sea level rise. @nasaclimatechange scientist Dr. Brooke Medley tells us how NASA studies the relationship between ice sheets and sea level to better understand our changing planet.
