POThere is no end to the advanced architecture of India’s public works. Roads, trees, gravity and time itself all collide in ways that make you raise your hand like you’re going to say something, but then you don’t, because words cannot describe these projects. Or numbers.
Mumbai has done the mathematically impossible and turned four into two, with a flyover that ends so abruptly you’d think it was advertising its own sequel. Tip: no overtaking.
Lucknow’s new flyover, which currently flies over nothing, leads to almost someone’s bedroom. The Rs 74 crore project has been halted for eight months because a building somehow accidentally got in the way.
Speaking of in the way, take the magnificent pylon right in the middle of a Bengaluru street, which helps the electricity flow even if the traffic cannot. No one is quite sure which was built first, the road or the tower, but it left everyone shocked (not literally, the wires are still off the ground).
Fortunately, there is a cure for traffic: build bridges so badly designed that no car can manage. Two such bridges exist, one in Bhopal that features a sharp 90-degree turn (although not for long, it’s being replaced with a less silly bridge), and one in Andhra Pradesh’s Penukonda, which features four 90 degree turns. And no, that doesn’t make a square, it just breaks maths (and people’s steering wheels).
