The system works by detecting fast-moving P-waves first, which are harmless, and sending out alerts before the destructive S-waves arrive. Over 4,000 seismometers are installed across the country, and alerts reach phones, televisions, and public speakers within 5 to 8 seconds of detection. During the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, people in Tokyo received up to 15 seconds of warning — enough time for bullet trains to halt, factories to shut down assembly lines, and millions to take cover. Studies show that even 10 seconds of warning reduces injury risk by nearly 40 percent. 🚨RARE MEGAQUAKE WARNING ISSUED IN JAPAN Breaking news. Japan has just issued a rare megaquake warning after the 7.6 earthquake that struck off Aomori on December 8, 2025. The Japan Meteorological Agency now says there is a higher chance of a magnitude 8 or larger earthquake along the northern Pacific coast in the coming days, especially from Hokkaido down through the Sanriku coast. This is not a random internet rumor. This is an official advisory from the agency that monitors Japan’s trenches and tsunami risk every day. The advisory covers 182 cities and towns along the Pacific side, including coastal areas that were already hit by tsunami waves after the 7.6 quake. In the worst government scenario, a megaquake in this segment could send tsunami waves up to around 30 meters high, affect millions of people, and cause tens of trillions of yen in damage. That includes nearly 200,000 potential deaths and around 31 trillion yen in economic losses in the most extreme case. If you live anywhere along the northern Pacific coast of Japan, this is the time to review evacuation maps, check tsunami routes, secure your home, and prepare for the possibility of another strong quake.
