GU‘For much of the world, “normal” is gone.’
This is what Prof Kaveh Madani, director of the UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, said to journalists in New York after publishing a report declaring that the world had entered an era of ‘global water bankruptcy’.
‘This is not to kill hope but to encourage action and an honest admission of failure today to protect and enable tomorrow,’ Madani said.
Seventy-five percent of people live in countries classified as water-insecure or critically water-insecure and 2 billion people live on ground that is sinking as groundwater aquifers collapse, while some the most visible signs of water bankruptcy are the 700 sinkholes peppering the heavily farmed Konya plain in Turkey.
Water overuse and pollution must be tackled urgently, the report’s lead author said, because no one knows when the whole system could collapse, with implications for peace and social cohesion.
Water-related conflicts have almost doubled since 2022 alone, while scarcity threatens to force up food prices.
The report, released last month, also points out that the risks are falling disproportionately on smallholder farmers, Indigenous peoples, low-income urban residents and women and young people, while the benefits of overuse often accrue to more powerful individuals.

Yet in polarized geopolitical spaces, criticism of these governments is sometimes dismissed or downplayed — particularly when they position themselves in opposition to Western powers.

STItaly's Giorgia Meloni ridiculed those wanting to 'distance' the country from the US, following the Trump Administration flouting international law in Venezuela and threatening to take control of Greenland, among other egregious threats and actions in recent weeks.
Fielding questions from Italian journalists during a three-hour-long press conference to mark the beginning of the new year in Rome on Friday, Meloni hit back at naive suggestions that national interests could be decoupled from foreign policy and geopolitics.
"You have to tell me what you mean to do, that is, do we need to distance ourselves in the sense that we should leave NATO, close the American bases, break off commercial relations, attack McDonald's, I don't know, what what should we do?" she quipped.
"Clearly, of course I don't agree with everything my partners say. With Trump I agreed on Venezuela, I didn't agree on Greenland," she continued, further arguing that every world leader would agree or disagree on different issues with other countries' leaders depending on their respective national interests.
"It's called defending one's national interest. Because the interests of nations do not always overlap perfectly. This is foreign policy, this is geopolitics. Everything else is good for gossip, but geopolitics, in my opinion, is not gossip," the Italian leader concluded.
