A glimpse of Hoʻākea 2025 at Mauliola, the home port of Hōkūle’a and Hikianalia. More than a thousand 4th graders from the Farrington-Kaiser-Kalani public school districts gathered for a powerful week of learning. They connected with ʻāina and waʻa based education shared by organizations from across Hawaiʻi. The experience reminds us of the importance of educating the next generation to sustain the future of stewardship, voyaging, and community in Hawaiʻi. And at the same time, we mahalo the children for their enthusiasm and for bringing their mana to this land and the wa’a from across the Pae ‘Āina. Mahalo nui loa to the DOE, all the waʻa & ʻāina organizations who shared their time and ʻike, and to our co-organizers @mauliola_keehi , @kokuakalihivalley , @educationincubator , and @kanehunamokuvoyaging for helping make this unforgettable week of visits possible.

Alumni of Ke Kula ʻo ʻEhunuikaimalino, Nikko and Nuʻu, provided current students of @ehunuikaimalino a tour of historic Kaukulaelae and Keauhou Bay as cultural ambassadors at Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa. “O ke kahua mamua, mahope ke kūkulu.” They shared how the cultural foundation they built in school continues to guide their work today. Their hope is that youth are inspired to weave their passions into meaningful careers here in Hawaiʻi. She was named Hikianalia after the star that rises with Hōkūleʻa in the latitude of Hawaiʻi and both waʻa kaulua are sailing together on the Moananuiākea Voyage. Te Mātāu a Māui - Waka Hauroa had their first Wānanga completed this long weekend, a powerful beginning in preparation for Te Hokinga, a journey of reconnection. Here, our kaumoana are learning, grounding, and preparing for the voyage ahead, from Ahuriri to Samoa and Fiji, returning home in September and October this year. A short glimpse into the wānanga, moments of learning, whakawhanaungatanga and strength; uplifted by the arrival of Tāwhirimātea on our final day in the bay. The powerful presence energised our momentum, within and physically, reminding us of the forces that guide our journey. He mihi nui to our leadership Piripi Smith, Te Kaha Hawaikirangi, Te Pō Hawaikirangi, and the Atea a Rangi Trust, this is happening because of their vision, guidance and unwavering support. He mihi anō to our Kaihautū for this wānanga; Turoa, Kahu and Dale, for steering us with knowledge, care and strength. Mahalo nui, Kalei Sine, for all you’ve done to move us forward. You’re a hard worker, a fast learner, a real “figure-um-outter,” always ready to kōkua and mālama others. Kalei started at Nā Kālai Waʻa fresh out of college as an intern in 2023 and grew into our Program Coordinator, working closely with kumu, haumāna, and partners to strengthen our programs — especially bonding with haumāna in Holokai. During her time, we welcomed Lauhoe and Kamakani, rebirthed Hōkūliʻiliʻi, and continued caring for Mauloa, Makaliʻi, Alakaʻi, and Kilaukea. She’s built strong pilina with these waʻa — and they with her. Kalei is a true reflection of the strength and aloha our young leaders carry. This isn’t goodbye — she’ll always be part of our crew and ʻohana. We’re proud of her and excited to see all she’ll continue to do. Me ke aloha nui, Kalei! E hoʻomau i ka ‘imi naʻauao ✨
