So, what’s Kitgum all about then? It’s unique that’s for sure. THE FOOD: I can confidently say that you won’t get anything like it in Brighton. It started off as Gujarati food, with nods to Persia & East Africa but we’re definitely (or defiantly) not authentic. Our food is forever evolving, taking inspiration from our life experiences… a melting pot of different cultures. THE MUSIC: bejng a dj in Brighton for many years, music is my first passion. Our original idea was to combine delicious food with wicked tunes… it’s loud but not too loud. I often catch people Shazamming our music and this makes me happy. We’re gonna be spending a bit more time and energy on our music. Watch this space. THE VIBE: a bit like me… it’s chaotic. Preston road, let’s face it, is not the most obvious place to have a restaurant… the first time people come to us, they just don’t know what to expect, but within minutes you see them getting into the vibes, the hustle… with closely set tables, our customers will end up chatting to the table next to them. I love this communal way of eating. Sometimes you see them waking out together still chatting. There’s lots of passion at kitgum. The whole team really care about what we’re doing here. The Dhopaluo (Chope) sub-dialect of Acholi is spoken in the Kiryandongo District in the kingdom of Bunyoro. It is also spoken in South Sudan in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria. Language: They speak Acholi, a Western Nilotic language, closely related to Luo spoken in Kenya. 3. Warrior Tradition: Historically, the Acholi were known for their strong warrior culture and unique weaponry like spears and shields. 4. Royal Clans: The Acholi have a chiefdom-based leadership system, with Rwodi (chiefs) who play a central role in maintaining cultural and social order. 5. Dances & Music: The Bwola dance is a signature Acholi royal dance, performed with drums and circular formation—it symbolizes strength and unity. 6. Traditional Justice: The Acholi practice a traditional justice system called Mato Oput, a reconciliation ritual that emphasizes truth-telling, forgiveness, and compensation over punishment. 7. Impact of Conflict: The Acholi region was heavily affected by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) conflict led by Joseph Kony—many Acholi were displaced, but the community has shown strong resilience in recovery. 8. Cuisine: Common Acholi foods include boo (a green leafy vegetable), malakwang (sour greens often cooked with groundnuts), and millet bread. 9. Craftsmanship: They are known for their skill in beadwork, basketry, and blacksmithing—historically producing tools and ornaments used in daily life.
