There are two approaches to teaching reading. Balanced literacy was started by people who thought reading comes naturally and by memorization. It teaches guessing strategies such as looking at the pictures and think of what word makes sense. Balanced literacy uses leveled readers and a leveled reading system. This approach was neatly packaged by big curricula companies and sold to districts across the country. If you want to go deep down the rabbit hole on how this is not an evidence based practice to teaching reading, listen to the podcast Sold a Story. Structured literacy takes into account the research on how the brain learns to read (SOR) and evidence based reading practices. Structured literacy uses multisensory practices and understand that the brain does not memorize words. We were born to speak but not read. Reading is a man made process that our brain has learned to adapt to. Structured literacy starts from a bottom up approach of explicitly teaching phonics and ALL strands of reading to become a successful reader. When did you realize there were two different ways/approaches on how to teach reading?
