In a blink of an eye, our first year in Mauritius is already gone 🌍🩵. And what started as a desire to learn the ways of farming, aiming for food sovereignty eventually, has turned into a Masters on cyclicality and shadow work. A fellow farmer recently told me “when you get into farming, it first breaks you” and how true is that. One arrives with their plans and goals for productivity and nature silently breaks all the false believes upon which they stand 😂🥲. She starts by slowing you the fuck down, stripping away any capitalist ways of working and consuming you may have and tuning you back to the Schumann resonance. She continues by teaching about true interbeing, including with your competitor predators. About impacting through small, consistent, effective actions, and composting the circus of “can do’s”, fears and “should’s” that will burn you —and her— out. On observation, dialogue, and resilience. Food doesn’t magically appear in grocery stores, it begins with soil, seasons, and the people willing to steward the land. Supporting farms like this isn’t just about better food. It’s about preserving a way of life and making sure the next generation grows up understanding the value of farmers and where their food truly comes from.

The idea is to mix seeds into small balls of clay and place them across the farm so they settle wherever the rain and the soil allow. Over time the plants establish themselves without the need for structured beds or planned sowing. This approach encourages abundance that feels natural and unforced. Many of these crops grow far beyond what we can harvest for sale, but that is part of the beauty. They feed the soil, support insects, and add resilience to the farm ecosystem. And thanks to the café we have a hundred people eating here each day, so even when the harvest is too large for the market it still finds its way into meals. A landscape that seeds itself becomes a landscape that feeds many.

Honestly… there isn’t just one reason. And I’m probably missing a couple that I would mention if you asked me on a different day 😂 I’ve actually journaled full pages with reasons why diving into the deep with this made so much sense… but also why it felt (and still feels, not gonna lie) a bit scary at times. I even turned down a really well-paid job to follow this path, and decisions like that definitely make me doubt myself sometimes. 🫣 For a while now I’ve felt this urge to spend more time outside, work more hands-on with nature, and understand better where our food actually comes from. But also to spend more of my time doing something that actively contributes to a healthier and fairer world. So starting this organic farming internship felt like the perfect place to explore that curiosity 🌱 Perfect timing with the start of the new growing season, amazing people with loaaaads of knowledge, feeling super welcome and at home, lots of fun, but also really good conversations. And honestly… I’ve been driving to and from the farm singing in the car with the biggest smile on my face. And when I read this back to myself, I realize again that it really is soooo worth embracing your curiosity and following the ideas that make you feel like the excitement is rushing through your body. (And yes, I’m SOOOO happy I turned that job offer down 😂) #organicfarming #curiosity #consciousliving #learningbydoing #lifepivot
