Traveling, organizing/mobilizing, and intense graduate study at @unionseminary 😮‍💨 it’s been difficult to prioritize care and unfortunately my loc maintenance took a dive as my studies usurped everything in my life 🫣 I’m in the home stretch now 🙏🏽 in the last 7 days I submitted 10 PhD applications, completed 2 of my 4 final projects/papers/exams, and made it to the last week of the semester in one piece 🫨 What didn’t kill me (but almost killed me) made me stronger 😭 I’m super proud of myself for all that I accomplished and overcame on the path to get here. 🥰 Sending love to all my classmates and comrades. We got this! 😘

When I started my loc journey, I got a lot of comments saying I was “damaging” my locs because I washed them within the first two weeks, used oil and water to retwist, and chose to soft retwist every two weeks. Truth is, I know my hair and I know what it can tolerate. Some people can go a month without washing their scalp, I personally can’t fathom that 😅. In warmer months, I wash weekly. In colder months, every two weeks. A soft retwist has actually saved my locs from thinning or “falling off da bone.” I don’t over-twist, and I avoid tight styles that cause unnecessary tension. I hydrate my hair daily-ish with aloe vera water. And yes, my hair may look “dry” to some, but that’s just my natural ashy brown color 😭🤣. Multiple stylists have confirmed my hair isn’t dry at all. I don’t desire to color it or use henna.. I’m content with what I was born with, even if it bothers others more than it ever bothered me. I prioritize hair health over looks, and clearly… it shows. Everyone’s hair is different, but respectfully.. I know what I’m doing when it comes to caring for mine. If you want to watch me reach bra-strap length next, follow along.
