Paris! Jayden Ali × MATTER and SHAPE For the 2026 edition of @matterandshape in the Jardin des Tuileries, architect @jaydenali of @ja__projects developed the spatial concept for the salon’s two pavilions, connecting the event to the layered history of the site. Their shimmering façade (developed w @studiohugoblanzat) references silk moiré, a nod to France’s 16th- and 17th-century ambition to establish a domestic silk industry — an effort that led to the planting of more than 20,000 mulberry trees across Paris. Inside, Ali introduced communal and talk spaces built from green oil-stained pine, hemp bricks, and adaptable timber systems. After the fair, these components will continue their life through a workshop Ali is leading with students at the @ecole_speciale in Paris. #matterandshape #jaydenali #parisdesign #architecturalentertainment

Researchers at UC Berkeley’s Morphing Matter Lab and Tsinghua University have developed MorphingSkin, a flexible artificial skin that could give robots a more adaptive sense of touch. The millimeter-thick material uses tiny electric pumps to move liquid through embedded channels, enabling it to push outward, create suction, change shape, and even display visual information. In tests, the team demonstrated a robotic gripper that automatically adjusts its grip strength based on object fragility, a companion robot capable of expressing emotions through physical movements, and a wearable device that provides haptic feedback during exercise. The system runs on a portable power unit, making untethered operation possible. The study, titled “MorphingSkin: A Skin-like Platform that Integrates Multimodal Hydraulic Actuators Based on Flexible Electroosmotic Pumps,” was presented at UIST 2025. The physics of sound made visible. By @journey.of.curiosity The cap of water is attached to small platform on a vibrating speaker. Coloured light is reflected from above. What we are seeing here is the reflected light on the waters surface. Once vibrating, it creates waves on the surface of the water, as peaks and troughs. The peaks and troughs of the water reflect the light differently, so through this we can see where and how the waves are moving. The waves move out from the centre, hit the edge, and then reflect back in on itself again. The points of interference of these waves is what creates the symmetrical peaks and troughs on the waters surface. Different frequencies have different wavelengths.
