He spent hours explaining “marbles” to the animators—the tiny bits of hot rubber that fly off tires during a race—to ensure that when Turbo is zipping around the track, the physics of the debris and the “point of view” of the racing line were 100% authentic to the Indianapolis 500. The film’s rendering process was an absolute marathon. It took a staggering 75 million render hours to complete the movie. If you tried to render Turbo on a single high-end home computer, it would have taken roughly 8,500 years to finish. This massive computing power was needed to capture the blur of the cars and the intricate detail of the snail shells, which were designed to look like “tricked-out” street racers with chrome and neon. Director David Soren actually got the idea for the movie from two unlikely sources: his young son’s obsession with toy cars and a massive snail infestation in his own front yard. He combined the two into a pitch he described as “Fast & Furious meets Rocky... but with snails.” The concept was so specific that Ryan Reynolds signed on immediately, marking his second DreamWorks role in a single year (the first being The Croods).
