Explained ⬇️ Left: Running slower but at a higher heart rate because I was chasing pace. I am aiming for the Olympics. I want to get faster. Back then I thought I needed to push myself to run faster every session. If the interval was longer I would run slightly slower, but I still tried to run as fast as I could for that workout. I thought pushing harder meant progressing. Right: Not worrying about pace because I now understand that pace depends on total running volume, intensity, hills, heat, wind, terrain, my menstrual cycle and other external factors. Now I train by effort. I use pace under similar conditions and the same heart rate targets to evaluate progress. The goal is not to run faster by forcing it. The goal is smart adaptation. Running faster for the same effort measured by heart rate. That is real fitness. You might be wondering what many of my athletes ask: How will you be able to push yourself in races if you are not practicing that in training? We race often. Not to always PR. But because racing is the best way to practice race execution. Training builds fitness. When the race ends, we mostly see the finish line celebration clips, splits, and podiums. We can lose sight of the years behind them. John Korir took his shot at the Frankfurt Marathon in 2019 and finished 12th. It wasn’t the result he needed to justify a career as a runner. He went back home to Kenya and to farming. But he kept training - through COVID, and when he got his second chance the results started to come - LA, Valencia, Chicago, and Boston…twice. It’s easy to celebrate the wins. It’s harder to appreciate the seasons where nothing seems to be working. But those are the moments that make everything that follows possible. Pre-run plate vs Post-run plate explained- can you spot the difference? 🤔 PRE RUN we’re focusing on CARBOHYDRATE 🥐🍯🍌 We want a mix of slower and faster digesting carbohydrates that are going to give us the energy we need and keep our tummies happy whilst we’re training ⚡️ 🥯 White Bagel- great boost of carbs as our base 🍓🍯 Jam and honey are great sugars which digest fast 🍌 Depending on how ripe your banana is actually changes how quickly it is digested but it’s a tummy friendly, easily digestible carb source that digests slower than the honey Our PRE RUN is also low in protein, fats and fibre- these are all going to slow down our digestion (meaning we’re more likely to have tummy troubles if we’re heading on our run shortly) and they don’t give us the energy boost we need POST RUN is where those protein, fats and fibre come in! We are still basing our plate on carbohydrate ‼ 🍞 But this time we’re going for a wholegrain for slower digesting carbs and added fibre and protein 🥑 Avo is packed with fibre and healthy fats which helps our digestive system and hormones 🍳 Eggs are a brilliant protein source and the yolks are full of fat soluble vitamins that our body needs (why pairing with avo makes this even more nutritious as it helps them absorb!) 🌾 Adding some seeds for extra fibre, protein and crunch then seasoning our plate replaces any electrolytes we might need By doing this we are giving our bodies everything they need to support our training and our daily life.
