This is called Chain-of-Thought reasoning. Researchers discovered that by observing this reasoning, we might be able to monitor AI’s intentions and detect dangerous behaviour early. But there’s a catch. Future AI systems may learn to hide their reasoning completely. If that happens, we may lose one of the few ways to monitor advanced AI.
