My walking started to slowly decline in April of 2022. But it wasn’t until 3 years later that we received the official, accurate diagnosis. Complex Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. A disease with a variable outlook depending on each person. A disease that slowly (and sometimes quickly) takes your abilities. Complex HSP is more severe. Some individuals, like me, become dependent upon a wheelchair, and experience significant disability. I lost my independent walking in November of 2023. I will not regain it back. And that’s not the goal. Walking is the main thing people expect your goal is gonna be. But there are many more important things. And walking isn’t the most important. Independence, transfers, safety, coping skills, social skills, recognizing emotions, doing my hair- that’s what matters most. Because with a severe and neurodegenerative disease, walking is unlikely. The world of social media has biggggggg opinions on a kid with a severe disability and what she should and shouldn’t do. Comments we got just last week…”she should be in a gait trainer”, “she needs braces”, “support her neck”, “stop torturing her”, “she will never walk,” and blah blah blah. Mary is not being tortured. She loves therapy, and I mean she really loves it. She would live at Napa center if she could. On Friday when we leave, she will have a meltdown. Crying, screaming, and grabbing onto doorways to try and stop us from leaving. We do intensive therapy because it’s sooooo good for her. She is 13 and still moving and grooving and just doing amazing. Kids like Mary need to move. Put bodies are meant to move. Sitting in a chair all day long is bad for long term health. The more she moves, the better her body is. Functional independence is our goal and always has been. Mary will never walk by herself. But we need her to be able to move and assist her to assist with transfers and transitions. Therapy helps us achieve that. For the past (almost) 3 weeks, Hutt has been working hard @napacenter, doing intensive therapies. Today is week 3, day 2 and look at what he’s doing; taking some small steps essentially alone. This is so huge for him. The progress he’s made had been incredible and I have parents tell me daily how amazing he’s doing. I notice a change but to hear it from outsiders makes my heart just burst. I’m so incredibly grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait until we can come back for another session. I get a lot of questions about this program, so I wanted to share. This is what we travel for once a year! It’s just physical therapy… but, more… intense! The main idea is that with the consistency of working the muscles over a contracted time period you’re building a little more strength each day. As opposed to working a muscle, letting it rest for a week, and then coming back to it. We’ve always worked with locations that pair this with TheraSuit, which is a sort of cloth and bungee orthotic that helps activate the appropriate muscles during therapy. We did this last round right before surgery to help Jaden to be as strong and healthy as possible before having to be inactive for so long. (If you missed stories, surgery went well and we’re resting/recovering at the hospital!) It’s great for kids with Spina bifida, CP, Muscular Dystrophy, and a plethora of other diagnoses. I’ve found less than 20 programs in the U.S., only two that take our primary insurance, and only one that will take both primary and secondary.
