This was the first time I ever spoke on stage about my journey as you can probably tell from the nerves in my voice.
During COVID, alcohol addiction nearly took my life. I was lucky enough to have the support of my family and loved ones, but I’ve met far too many others who didn’t have that same safety net and tragically, they’re no longer with us.
Public speaking has always been difficult for me. I dread it every time. But I’ll keep pushing through that fear if it means raising awareness about mental health and addiction. I’ll continue to bang the drum for those who feel like they’re suffering in silence, because you’re not alone, and help is out there.

Addiction is a disease.
The American Society Addiction Medicine (ASAM) defines Addiction as a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations.
People with a substance use disorder may have distorted thinking and behaviors. Changes in the brain’s structure and function are what cause people to have intense cravings, changes in personality, abnormal movements, and other behaviors.
Brain imaging studies show changes in the areas of the brain that relate to judgment, decision making, learning, memory, and behavioral control. People with substance use and behavioral addictions may be aware of their problem but not be able to stop even if they want and try to.
The addiction may cause physical and psychological problems as well as interpersonal problems such as with family members and friends or at work.
Alcohol and drug use is one of the leading causes of preventable illnesses and premature death nationwide.
TREATMENTS include:
*Hospitalization for medical withdrawal management (detoxification).
*Therapeutic communities or sober houses.
*Outpatient medication management and psychotherapy.
*Intensive outpatient programs.
*Residential treatment (“rehab”).
*Mutual-aid groups (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, SMART Recovery).
*Self-help groups that include family members (Al-Anon or Nar-Anon Family Groups).

PIOn #NationalWomenTouchedByAddictionDay, we want to share the story of a local Pima County woman - Bridget.
When she lost custody of her children due to substance use, she was at an all-time low. But then, she found a strong support network.
She has experienced every form of trauma in her life and now she helps guide others through theirs.
“I have a sponsor. I have a program. And I have a network of women that are here to support me with everything that I do,” she said. “I believe that it’s never going to be something that you can do on your own.”
There are many avenues to build a support network around you. It can be from support groups, such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous, or can be non-substance-related, like a parenting or a sports group.
“I’ve lost custody of both my children and now I’m a single mother working in behavioral health,” she said. “I chose drugs my whole life. Now, I choose life.”
