Plant (native) gardens, not lawns! 🌼 🐝 This is why we are so passionate about native plants! Native bees, like this tiny Sweat Bee, are solitary creatures. Of the 20,000 species of bees in the world, over 90% do not live in colonized hives. Because they’re solitary they also don’t produce honey, instead they eat what they harvest and store the rest in their shelters for their newly hatched offspring. This also means they are much more docile, as they don’t have honey filled colonies to protect. While honey bees are effective pollinators, our native bees are far more efficient, two to three times more in fact. The University of Berkeley is stated saying that tomato farmers have seen a 50% increase in yield if they’ve been visited by indigenous bumble bees. Honey bees have success in numbers and will collect pollen from just about anything, our native bees however have had millions of years to become finely tuned experts when it comes to pollinating the flora specific to where they live. #californianativeplants #biodiversity #gardenlove #bees #interesting

What natives are you planting this spring? 👀🌱 ➡️If you’re new to natives, try these approachable species! –Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea purpurea) –Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) –Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) –Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve) –Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) When grown from seed, these species do not require a lengthy stratification period and will germinate readily in the spring (Germination Code A). They also provide an abundance of nectar, pollen, and habitat for imperiled pollinators. 🐝❤️ P.S. Be sure to check individual species pages to ensure they fit your specific site conditions for the best success. #nativeplantsofnorthamerica

Seed sowing carries on here, quietly and steadily. This week, we tucked even more of our favorite native plants under the grow lights — trusted natives that grow with ease, ask for little and give so much. One we especially love is the Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos), whose blooms become a beautiful and lively place for hummingbirds. If you want to attract hummingbirds, this is THE one.
