Another 🤯 moment. What would your answers have been? 💬 Neurotypical people don’t usually think or talk about their interests with the same intensity or frequency as autistic people. Research shows that while interests are common in everyone, autistic people tend to engage with theirs more deeply and consistently, whereas neurotypical interests are often more fleeting or socially influenced (Jordan & Caldwell-Harris, 2012; DeLoache et al., 2007; Anthony et al., 2013). 🧠 As always, what I share is based on my experience as an autistic autism assessor and speech pathologist, the lived experiences of the autistic community, and what I’ve seen across 8 years of autism assessments. These insights reflect common themes I’ve observed in ‘clinical’ settings, assessment conversations, and client storytelling. It may not apply to everyone, and research is still catching up on a lot of this! While this content is not intended as clinical advice, it draws on my lived and professional experience to make space for shared understanding and further discussion. I’d love to see more research in this space, and I’m always open to chatting with or supporting researchers – especially autistic researchers – who feel called to explore and build on these insights. There’s so much more to discover together! #autism #actuallyautistic #neurotypical #adhd #specialinterest

Drop a 🔑 if you relate! . . One of the many reasons people with ADHD struggle with deadlines. But there are many coping techniques you can learn to overcome or at least evaluate this very powerful urge. What works for you? . . I ask myself - Is this the best use of my time right now?

“Why is it so hard to focus??”⁣ There are quite a few of you in this community with ADHD who ask me for tips on how to better focus and make progress.⁣ ⁣ I’m not an expert in this space so looked at some of the research, specifically Garber’s work which explores the careers of adults with ADHD and offers guidance on how to increase chances of success, professionally. ⁣ ⁣ The reality is, everyone’s experience of ADHD as an adult is different. What tends to be common however is that if you have ADHD (or if you’re neurodivergent more broadly), it can be a real struggle to focus because of how your brain is wired, which means it can be more challenging to complete tasks and achieve goals. As a result, you might struggle in your career and feel helpless at times because people simply “don’t understand…”⁣ ⁣ If you have ADHD (or even if you have troubles focussing), please share what works best for you in the comments. Let’s create a community of sharing and support. xx👇⁣ ⁣ ⁣ The full reference to research in case anyone is interested to learn more: ⁣ Garber, P. (2001). The conversation around #neurodiversity is so incredibly important. I questioned why my informative years where so tough for such a long time, and everyday since this conversation has become mainstream I am learning that my mind didn’t work the same as other children. From a young age I knew that I wanted to be a hairdresser, at the age of 13 I started working in a salon on Saturdays and in school holidays, alongside working in hotels washing dishes and painting children’s faces on Butlins, so my work ethic was strong. At school this was never celebrated and I found school to be the unhappiest time of my life. I recently spoke about some of my earliest experiences with @seedlip_ben on the @hidden20podcast and have been humbled by the response. Diagnosis at whatever stage of life is like opening a door to what life is supposed to be like, that there really is no normal, our brains are all wired differently and to understand how your own brain functions is mind blowing, literally. #MentalHealth & #MentalFitness is nothing new, what is new are the resources to learn and understand it a little better, the communities that are supporting each others journeys and the stories that are being shared. I wish more than anything that talking about how you really feel, how you cope, how you work, how your mind works, how those workings affect how you manage your life day to day becomes the norm. That schools and education bodies take all of these things into consideration and action the changes that are needed to set strong foundations for those who are #NeuroDiverse as they do for those who are #NeuroTypical I listened to @drmarkrackley this morning talking to @adhd_chatter_podcast and it all makes a little more sense. #NeuroDiversity sits in a huge spectrum, some things you may relate to, some things you may not, but, talking and sharing is key to building this caring community. Diagnosis, for me personally, was a game changer, it allowed me to start to make sense of my mind, my thoughts and my feelings, Diagnosis was the start of the next chapter for me. Yes there is a lot of internal shit that I need to sort out, but in my case knowledge definitely is power

The opposite of “Neurodivergent” isn’t “Neurotypical” 👀 The word “neurodivergent” can be really useful - especially to collectively describe the common experiences of people with neurodevelopmental differences like autism, ADHD, and other diagnoses (& there’s ongoing discussion about what should fall under the ND umbrella) ☂️ Being autistic, or ADHD, has very real impacts on people’s lives, access to support, and how safe or unsafe the world feels for their nervous systems. 💛 We see this everyday, and we know how important it is to be able to acknowledge this with constructs like “neurodivergent”. ‼️But there are problems with using neurotypical as the opposite: There isn’t a single, standard, “typical” brain that everyone else has. There is no one way a brain is meant to work. There is no “neurotypical” brain. 🧠 We don’t want a world split into “neurotypical vs neurodivergent.” ❌ ⏩️ Not all neurodivergent people are the same. ⏩️ Not all non-autistic or non-ADHD or non-(insert diagnosis here) people are the same. Every nervous system is shaped by personality, culture, race, upbringing, trauma, environment, and so much more 🧬 Just to be clear: this is not a “we’re all a bit neurodivergent” take. What we’re questioning isn’t the reality of neurodivergence; we absolutely need to recognise and value people whose ways of thinking, feeling, sensing, and being in the world have been invalidated because they don’t fit what’s expected. This is at the heart of what we do. 🫶🏼 🤔 What we are questioning is the idea that there is a single, neutral, default kind of brain. We are questioning the wisdom of setting up a false brain-based dichotomy in the world, losing nuance and creating an “us versus them” situation that will ultimately create more division. This is such a complex topic! Have we done it justice in this small space? Thanks @_dr_inna for raising this last week. Let us know what you think about it all in the comments.
