The New Shepard suborbital flight demonstrates fundamental rocket physics and orbital mechanics without entering full orbit. During launch, powerful rocket thrust overcomes Earth’s gravity, accelerating the vehicle almost vertically to maximize altitude rather than horizontal speed. As it climbs past the Kármán line (~100 km), the engines shut down and the capsule enters freefall. Although gravity is still strong at this height, passengers experience weightlessness because they and the spacecraft accelerate downward at the same rate — creating microgravity conditions. The trajectory follows a ballistic arc governed purely by gravity and inertia. During descent, atmospheric drag increases rapidly, and parachutes deploy to convert kinetic energy into air resistance, ensuring a controlled landing in the Texas desert. The entire flight is a precise balance of thrust, gravity, and drag. #asteriontalks #NewShepard #BlueOrigin #SuborbitalFlight #SpaceflightPhysics

Crewed suborbital flights by Blue Origin are conducted using the reusable New Shepard system, designed for space tourism and scientific experiments in microgravity. The vehicle consists of a single-stage booster and a pressurized crew capsule. The rocket stands about 18 meters tall and is powered by the BE-3 engine running on liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. After liftoff, the rocket accelerates the capsule along a suborbital trajectory, reaching an altitude of over 100 km, crossing the Kármán line — the internationally recognized boundary of space. During the flight, passengers experience about 3–4 minutes of weightlessness as the capsule follows a ballistic trajectory. During this phase, crew members can float freely inside the cabin and observe Earth through some of the largest windows ever installed on a crewed spacecraft. Afterward, the capsule returns to Earth using parachutes, while the rocket booster performs a controlled vertical landing and can be reused for future missions. Over the next decade, Blue Origin plans to significantly expand its role in private spaceflight. In addition to suborbital tourism missions, the company is developing the heavy-lift orbital rocket New Glenn and is involved in building lunar landing systems for the Artemis program. In the long term, Blue Origin is also considering the development of commercial space stations and infrastructure for private crewed missions, which could make commercial human spaceflight one of the key directions of space exploration in the 21st century 🚀 follow us @cosmostuff_space

What would you do if a thruster on the Space Shuttle Orbiter got stuck… and suddenly the vehicle started spinning faster and faster in orbit? In this episode of Spacecraft Guide, we take you inside a real astronaut-level scenario and show you exactly how they would stop it. For the long version, go to https://youtu.be/e6daxydHSNw For our Instagram People, go to 'All my videos' in my Bio. Join Our Patreon for the full video including diagrams and in depth explination at https://www.patreon.com/SIVRMuseum The answer lies in the Aft Reaction Control System Helium Pressure Switches—a critical set of controls that can instantly cut off the pressure driving fuel and oxidizer to the thrusters. When you’re traveling over 17,000 miles per hour in the vacuum of space, knowing how to shut down a runaway thruster isn’t just important—it’s mission critical. We break down how these switches work in both Manual and computer-controlled (General Purpose Computer) modes. You’ll see how “OPEN” allows helium pressure to push propellant into the system, enabling thrust, while “CLOSE” shuts that pressure off—effectively stopping a malfunctioning jet in its tracks. Then we show how the General Purpose Computer (GPC) automates this process during normal operations, translating pilot inputs into precise thruster firings. This is where you start thinking like an astronaut—understanding not just what the switch does, but when and why you would use it in a real emergency. If you want the full experience, Patreon is where it all opens up. Members get the extended, long-form versions of these lessons—deeper schematics, real cockpit workflows, and the kind of insight that turns curiosity into true understanding. For about the price of a cup of coffee a month, you unlock the systems behind how astronauts actually flew the Shuttle, plus exclusive breakdowns you won’t find anywhere else. Share this with someone who loves spaceflight, join the community, and be part of something even bigger—where you can get your name tied to a real time capsule headed to the Moon while learning the engineering that made human spaceflight possible. 🚀
