They may feel like if they don’t share every single thing, they are lying and the therapist will not be able to assess whether or not it’s OCD aka “if you don’t hear every detail, I can’t trust that it’s actually OCD and not you just thinking it’s OCD” . OCD specialists are aware of this and often (kindly) stop clients from going down this road 🤎 The confession is more engagement with obsessions that ultimately fuel’s OCD’s presence. . From the outside, it can look like your child is being rude, rigid, or overreacting. On the inside, their brain is scanning nonstop for what might contaminate them next. And parents often get pulled into it without realizing it — just by moving through the house normally. Understanding what’s happening doesn’t mean changing your behavior to give in to OCD. It means recognizing the pattern so you can respond in ways that help your child build skills instead of growing the OCD. Don’t talk to me about OCD if you’ve never experienced this. Because for me… this wasn’t a trend. This wasn’t “overthinking.” This wasn’t being “too anxious.” This was my life. From 2017 to 2021, OCD completely took over me. It was waking up with fear already in my chest. It was intrusive thoughts that felt so real I questioned myself. It was mental rituals, checking, reassurance… anything just to feel safe for one more minute. I smiled in public… and fought a war in private. So when people speak on OCD like it’s nothing, it hurts. Because if you haven’t lived it… you don’t understand how dark it can get. I’m sharing this for the ones who feel alone. You’re not crazy. You’re not broken. You’re battling something invisible. If things aren’t “right” I don’t feel like I am able to rest or enjoy anything. I’ve alway struggled but after becoming a mom, things have gotten a lot harder. Healing is learning that the mess can wait. And I’m still worthy of sitting down. #ocdawareness #worthyofrest #motherhood

1️⃣Mentally checking to make sure that I didn’t “secretly” want to cheat on my partner 2️⃣ Avoiding looking at people I found attractive to avoid being “disloyal” 3️⃣Seeking reassurance to “make sure” I didn’t hurt his feelings 4️⃣Internally reassuring myself that I did NOT cheat on him and forget about it (false-memory, anyone??) 5️⃣Ruminating about whether or not being annoyed by something my partner said meant he wasn’t “the one” Heeerrreee’s the thing, engaging in these fear-driven behaviors did not actually make me a “good”, honest partner. All they did was make me more afraid. Which, in turn, eroded the health of my relationship 🫠 If you struggle with compulsions like these like I did, here are a few reminders: 🩵Compulsions will not strengthen your relationship in the long term 🩵No amount of rumination, checking etc will help you know “for sure” that your partner is “the one”. 🩵Just because you have a thought, that doesn’t mean it’s true (example: The thought “His outfit is ugly, what if that means I’m not attracted to him?” does not have true meaning.) Relationship OCD is so, so painful, but it’s treatable!! You aren’t alone, and you don’t HAVE to give in to OCD’s demands. PS. When I told my OCD to get bent and refused to answer its questions, my relationship strengthened.
