Situated on the banks of Willamette Falls, it has been a gathering place for Native Americans for thousands of years. In the 1810s, Euro-American fur trappers discovered the area’s rich resources. In 1829, early white settlers founded a town. Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington have experienced heavy rainfall, leading to flooding of at least two rivers, school closures and power outages on Tuesday morning. An atmospheric river (as big as the Mississippi in the sky) has already dropped several inches of rain since Monday, with continued heavy rain expected through Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service. A flood watch is in effect until Thursday afternoon, increasing the risk of urban and river flooding. Some schools in the Coast Range and Cascades started late, while the Seaside and Toledo districts closed for the day. Seismologists say there’s a 37% chance of a similar size or even bigger earthquake hitting the Pacific Northwest in the next 50 years — what’s become known as the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake, or “The Big One.” So why are there all these tsunamis in the Pacific, and what would it mean for the Pacific Northwest? Sometimes it seems like the world is moving too fast. So we here at OPB wanted to try something: we wanted to see what happens when we take it slow. Really slow. 🐌 We’re launching a new experiment called “OPB’s Slow TV.” The idea is: our region is full of beautiful places and moments, and we want to take you there. Think: 🚢On a barge through the scenic Columbia River Gorge. 🚂On a train up the side of Mount Hood. 🛶On a canoe around Upper Klamath Lake. 🌄To a stunning sunset in Astoria with ships sailing by. We’re filming in 4k, so you can watch the videos on your TV and take in the full sights and sounds. Or you can put them on in the background while you do something else, like prepare a holiday feast for your friends and family.
