SH🚫 5 Fitness Myths Women Over 40 Need to Know 🚫
1️⃣ Weight gain is inevitable with age🚫
Age, peri-menopause and menopause bring changes (I’m experiencing them right now), but that doesn’t mean inevitable weight gain. Hormonal shifts, including thyroid and insulin sensitivity, can make it harder, but the basics (strength training, balanced nutrition, and daily movement) are still the foundation to stay fit and strong. Even if you correct hormonal imbalances or deficiencies, the fundamentals MUST BE in place to hit your goals. If you suspect hormones, insulin or thyroid issues, which are common for women after 40, seek help WHILE practicing habits to support your goals. No matter what, DO NOT give up on yourself.
2️⃣ Weights make you bulky🚫
Lifting weights won’t make you bulky! It builds lean muscle, which helps burn fat and creates a toned, sculpted look.
3️⃣ Cardio makes you toned🚫
Cardio is great for heart health, but strength training is what shapes your body and boosts metabolism. Toned = calorie deficit to lose fat and strength training to support/build lean muscle.
4️⃣ Carbs make you fat🚫
Carbs are your muscles preferred energy source! It’s about balance, not cutting out entire food groups. Growing lean muscle requires training close to failure. Quality carbs will fuel your workouts and help recovery. Total calories will determine weight, not total carbs. Align calories with your goals, prioritize protein and balance fats and carbs. They both provide essential energy and nutrients.
5️⃣ Skinny = healthy🚫
At my thinnest I was also my MOST unhealthy. Just eating as little as possible, doing shake diets, or hours of daily cardio all to see a low number on the scale will NOT lead you to health and will likely backfire at some point. Focusing habits to help you feel strong like quality nutrition, strength training, daily movement, and proper sleep will give you lasting results and health.
Sharing because I was that cardio queen, afraid of food and carbs and wondered if I’d ever be able to change my body. Once I leaned into the truth and implemented the right habits, a new world unlocked.
