If PBIS is working for you, I’m SO happy for you. I truly am. I want you to succeed and for you to feel like you’ve got a hold on your classroom management. I could never work at a PBIS school, it just isn’t for me. I’ve also had so many teachers share their experience with me who have been at this type of school and feel like all it does is create more work for them as the teacher and doesn’t actually help students change their behavior long term. If you’re considering working at a PBIS school, just make sure you understand the requirements on you as a teacher and what that means for your management. What are your thoughts on PBIS? If your are at this type of school and love it, what do you think makes it work for you? If you’re struggling, why do you feel like it isn’t working?

Hear me out- PBIS isn’t inherently bad. There’s a lot of good things…but is the incentive piece actually helping to improve behavior? If you’ve been around for awhile, you know that I am all about keeping things simple and the PBIS systems I’ve seen and/or been a part of are anything but simple. You have to earn so many points to get the school reward and then those points can enter you into this raffle or that bingo space for a chance to be chosen for a prize…maybe. It’s a lot to keep up with. I am all for celebrating (and encouraging) positive behavior! With consistency across the board, it’s wonderful. But are these incentive systems ever consistent? And working hard to earn tickets (tokens or whatever system you choose) only to be entered for a chance a prize doesn’t make sense to kindergarten students. When they see a kid who earned one ticket get a prize and they have 15 tickets and get nothing. That’s not encouraging them to make more good choices. And the kid with only one ticket learns they can do whatever they want 90% of the time and get rewarded anyway. And you have generally well-behaved kids stressed out about whether or not they have enough tickets points to get to the school reward. And In my experience, everyone gets to go anyway. There’s no accountability. So the conscientious kids are stressed out for no reason. Then the kids who need extra support with behavior can act however they want. So what’s the point if we aren’t holding kids accountable it’s a party…not a reward. Not to mention these complex systems are just additional requirements for already over-worked teachers. Maybe I’ve just had bad experiences? But what’s wrong with accountability and behavior support for those who need it? What has your experience with PBIS been like? How to Handle Power Struggles in the Classroom (Without Losing Your Mind) Power struggles happen when a student feels out of control — and the worst thing we can do is match their energy. Here’s what actually works: 🔥 1. Stay calm — their storm doesn’t have to become yours. Your tone sets the temperature. Slow your voice, lower your volume, keep your face neutral. 🔥 2. Give choices, not demands. “Take out your notebook now” becomes “Would you rather start with your notebook or your warm-up sheet?” Choice = dignity + control. 🔥 3. Use the 3-second pause. Say it. Stop talking. Walk away. Power struggles die without an audience. 🔥 4. Acknowledge the feeling, not the behavior. “I hear you. You’re frustrated.” Validation drops defenses. 🔥 5. Redirect the energy. “I can help you when you’re ready.” It places responsibility back on the student — without the battle. 🔥 6. Win with connection, not control. Power struggles aren’t about the pencil, the seat, or the Chromebook. They’re about trust. When students feel safe, seen, and respected… compliance follows. Teachers don’t need more battles. PBIS 101 has nothing to do with rewards and consequences and everything to do with clarity. Before you positively reinforce or ignore or allow a natural consequence to happen….Make certain everyone is clear what the expectations are. Ask the neurodivergent pop how we feel about PBIS and we will gladly tell you. It doesn’t work- it harms the psychological needs students need to thrive- and I finally developed the research list that is located in my stories! BUT 👇 If you need real solutions to solve your neurodivergent students behavior 🗣️ YOU NEED TO GET RESOURCES FROM NEURODIVERGENT PEOPLE 🗣️ Trainings, handouts, strategies, tips/tricks- if it is about a neurodivergent brain it needs to be AT LEAST CO-AUTHORED by an ND person. Because we understand what it feels like to use the strategies, what it feels like when they work and when they don’t, 👉 AND what it feels like to be shamed, ridiculed, ignored, and patronized by these “gold standard systems”. PBIS and ABA I’m looking at you. Nothing about us without us. If you want a resource that is developed for Autistic/ADHD behavior in the classroom COMMENT NEEDS. I will send you the Neurodivergent Toolkit that has over 100 strategies, lesson plans, graphic organizers, stories, and how to read and analyze ND behavior to help support it.
