PMDD is not one-size fits all. Studies have suggested differences in: 1️⃣ Biotypes: which hormone triggers symptoms for someone 2️⃣ Temporal subtypes: the timing of symptom onset and offset 🧬And why does the hormone piece matter? In lots of PMDD messaging, progesterone gets framed as the enemy, when in reality it’s far more individual and nuanced than that. Some appear sensitive to estrogen only. This one-size-fits all messaging can prevent people from figuring out what works for them. 🗓️Why does the timing difference matter? Without incorporating this into diagnostic criteria, doctors and gynaecologists may be missing individuals whose PMDD presents differently from the textbook pattern. Hopefully one day, when the evidence is clear enough, they can be defined in medical guidance to avoid this. This is early-stage research so there are no accurate definitions of subtypes just yet, but it shows that PMDD isn’t experienced the same way for everyone. Eisenlohr-Moul et al. Are there temporal subtypes of premenstrual dysphoric disorder?: using group-based trajectory modeling to identify individual differences in symptom change. Psychol Med. 2020 Wei et al. Differential Effects of Ovarian Steroids in Women With and Without Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: A Replication and Extension of Findings. Am J of Psychiatry, 2025 Eisenlohr-Moul. These are 5 things I really wish I’d known earlier in my PMDD journey, so I’m sharing in case it helps you on yours! 1. It gets easier when you stop trying to fight it. I know that sounds impossible when you’re in the depths of it, but resisting and resenting the sadness, the rage, the fatigue - it only made me feel worse. 2. Being open about it helped me stop masking all the time. I could finally breathe and stop pretending to be ok, when I wasn’t. 3. Not everyone will get it. That used to really hurt, but now I know that’s about them, not me! 4. PMDD gives us this wild level of empathy. We feel it all - deeply. That can be brutal, but it also makes us incredibly powerful. 5. You are SO much more than PMDD - even though it tries to convince us otherwise. Hold on to the unique qualities, quirks and strengths that make you absolutely amazing and don’t lose sight of them in the dark. Can you relate to any of these? Let me know in the comments. 💬 #pmdd #pmddawareness #luteallife #pmddcommunity #livingwithpmdd #pmddsupport #notjustpms #pmddawarenessmonth #seeherthrive

HAPPY PMDD AWARENESS MONTH! ☺️ It’s always good to open the discussion about symptoms we have that are beyond the basic list you’ll find through a google search, because we all experience this disorder a bit differently, and it helps us feel less alone about those things that it seems like nobody else feels or understands 🤍 This is from my tiktok account and I just posted part 2 there as well (same username over there if you like that app and want to follow me there too) 🥰 #pmddsupport #pme #pmdd #pmddawarenessmonth #hormonehealth

Sharing because for half the month, I just didn’t have it in me. It felt easier, almost necessary, to throw myself into bed before the thoughts became too heavy. Before the weight of my emotions became too much. It was this way for years. I could barely get up out of bed, much less do the “basic” things. Showering, doing laundry, and brushing my teeth felt scarily difficult. I was diagnosed with PMDD a couple years later. 1 in 3 people with PMDD will attempt. More than half experience ideation. If your PMS makes you want to d!e, it’s not just PMS. There is support. There are treatments. There are changes you can make that will help it get easier. And you are not alone. #pmdd #pmddawareness #pmddsucks #pmddsupport #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #pmddawarenessmonth

My PMDD symptoms were things like: anger, irritability, light sensitivity, lack of interest in typical activities… Initially I felt overwhelmed, how was I going to manage this? Was prescription medication my only option? I feel fine 60% of the time can I just grit my teeth through these emotions? I slowly but surely found my way through the options by trial and error. I had to approach how to treat my symptoms with patience and an exploratory mind. How could I observe and find new awareness in my body as I tried every modality under the sun? For me, the things that ignited the biggest change was supplements. Adding nutritional support into my every day routine. Creating a routine that was nourishing not just my body but my mind. The minutes I spent taking my daily supplements are minutes I spent reflecting on how I’ve been supporting myself, on how I’m feeling, on what I need or need to get rid of. No two journeys with #PMDD are the same but we can all support each other in taking ownership in our own journey. #pmddawareness #pmddpeeps #pmddsupport #pmddwarrior #pmddawarenesschallenge #pmddawarenessmonth

No one warned me this could happen. No one told me estrogen was directly related to executive functioning & ADHD symptoms No one told me over 40% of menstruating ADHDers experience PMDD (extreme pms) And no one told me my medication wouldn’t work as well in my luteal phase So I blamed myself. Every month my life would slowly descend into disarray. My new routines and motivation would start to slip and the overwhelm set in. I couldn’t do my work, keep up with chores, or get off my phone. For 3 days anxiety would swallow me whole, convincing me my life had turned to shit and everyone hated me… until my cycle started and I remembered who I was again. But I still blamed myself! Every other womxn did it.. why can’t I? It wasn’t until I started learning more and tracking my cycle that I truly understood why I struggled so much. Only then could I start supporting myself and setting more realistic expectations. Seriously, how could I expect consistency when I’m a different person in the second half of the month?! So if you’re also experiencing this, wondering why one week you feel great and the next you can’t cope… it’s not your fault and you’re not alone. I encourage all my clients to become aware of how their cycle impacts their ADHD so they can find a rhythm (instead of a routine) and support themself when they need it most 🫶 Have you noticed your cycle impacts your symptoms too? It’s PMDD awareness month 💙 This is a throwback from an APEC Females and the Economy panel where I talk a bit about it. My friends will all know that I’m a majorly obsessed with talking about periods and cycles. PMDD awareness is suicide prevention. It’s when people experience abnormal reactions to the fluctuations of hormones in their cycle, usually in the luteal phase. PMS’s evil cousin, it has only been recognised by DSM-5 in 2013 (as it is often misdiagnosed as other things) and affects 5-8% of people who menstruate. I’m posting this in case someone has a ‘lightbulb moment’ 💡for themselves or someone else.
