STOP lifting heavy weights if you have back pain. Back pain is not a sign that you need more pressure. It’s a sign that you need better control. Most people with lower back pain jump straight into heavy squats, deadlifts, or random gym machines hoping to “strengthen” their back. But pain is rarely about weakness alone. It’s usually about: • Poor core activation • Lack of deep stability • Tight hips and thoracic stiffness • Muscle imbalances from sitting all day • Compensating with the lower back instead of using glutes and core Adding load to dysfunction only increases compression. Before lifting heavy, you need to: ✔️ Restore spinal alignment ✔️ Activate deep core muscles (transverse abdominis) ✔️ Improve hip mobility ✔️ Strengthen glutes properly ✔️ Learn how to control movement — not just survive it This is why controlled, intentional training like mat Pilates and stability work is often the smarter first step. As a former professional athlete, I’ve trained with heavy weights for years. But when it comes to back pain — intelligence beats intensity. Fix the foundation. Then build strength. For athletes like Trevon Diggs who are coming off of a knee injury, Pilates can be incredibly beneficial in your recovery process, preventing their reoccurrence, monitoring/correcting imbalances and preventing muscle atrophy. With Trevon still rehabbing his ACL injury from last year’s NFL season and getting ready to return this season, we focus on a lot of core strength, as well as strengthening the knee stabilizers. A strong and stable core provides support to your knees and really helps the body execute force evenly, so there is less strain on the ligament during movement. A stronger core is also going to have great impact on balance, coordination, and overall performance on the field! Looking forward to seeing an incredible and healthy comeback season with the Cowboys! Working Trevon on the @merrithew V2 Max Plus Reformer and the Extended version. STOP lifting heavy if your back hurts. Back pain is not a signal to push harder. It’s a signal that something isn’t working properly. Most people feel lower back pain and immediately add more weight, squats, deadlifts, machines, trying to “strengthen” it. But pain is rarely just weakness. It’s usually: • A core that isn’t activating • Deep stabilizers doing nothing • Tight hips from sitting all day • A stiff upper back • Glutes not doing their job • The lower back overcompensating for everything And when you load dysfunction, you multiply compression. Before you touch heavy weight again, ask yourself: ✔️ Can you control your pelvis? ✔️ Can you brace your deep core correctly? ✔️ Do your glutes actually fire? ✔️ Can your spine move segment by segment? ✔️ Or are you just surviving reps? Strength without control is stress. That’s why intelligent training, mat Pilates, stability work and controlled tempo should be step one, not ego lifting. I trained heavy for years as a professional athlete. But when it comes to back pain, smarter always wins over stronger. Build the foundation. Then build the load. If you sit a lot, work from home, or feel that constant lower back tightness this is your sign to train differently. Save this.
