MOThe comparison of my latest before and after with my prosthetic eyes 💙
The blue ones are my favourite. I love how they look.
The old one (as you can see) was quite high, and ended up lifting my eyelid a little too high, this meant the surface would easily dry out and the eye wouldn’t close properly at night. There was also a small gap in the outer corner that meant air could sneak in and it dried out the back socket and caused increased sensitivity.
The new one however has almost gone the opposite way! It’s so flat my eye lid is a little lower than the other but it’s definitely more comfortable.
Whilst I do love both blues, I love the old one a little bit more.
The primary thing for me is comfort. Both eyes cosmetically considerably better than what I had before my eye was removed so the appearance bothers me less. It’s just a new look to try out for now and see how we get on!

AJGrowing up, I was never looking at the camera.
The photos exist...
But I’m always slightly turned away in them. Looking down at ground or wearing my dark glasses.
I lost my right eye at 18 months old due to post-measles complications.
It was surgically removed when I was 7 and I have worn a prosthesis ever since.
This experience shaped how I related to cameras long before I had words for it.
It wasn't shyness. It was self-protection.
I didn't know how to handle looking different from everyone else I knew.
I didn't know how to deal with kids calling me names and adults examining me as a medical curiosity, without consent.
But I knew that if I didn't face the lens when the camera turned towards me, no one would know.
There would be nothing to comment on. Nothing to feel exposed about.
When you grow up with something that makes you feel visibly different, you don’t just hate being seen.
You hate being constantly evaluated, examined and commented upon.
So you adapt.
You disappear just enough to feel safe.
I didn’t grow out of it automatically. I trained myself out of it.
That meant rebuilding my relationship with myself from the ground up.
Learning self-acceptance where there was once self-monitoring. Learning self-respect where there was once self-protection.
It was decades of deliberate work.
Of undoing the belief that being visible required permission.
Of internalising that we don’t become our highest selves by fixing what’s “wrong” with us.
We become that when we stop shaming away the parts of ourselves we learned to hide.
Integration is the work.
And self-esteem is a by-product of no longer rejecting who you really are.
