Yesterday was World Water Day, Saturday was International Forest Day. Hahai nō ua i ka ululāʻau, the rain follows the forest, it is connected. Healthy nativeforests on the mauna help capture, absorb, and store fresh water. When we restore native forests, we prevent erosion, save the habitat of Hawaiiʻs endemic species, and restore balance to the interconnected living net of life, from mauka to makai. Help support you local watershed and native forest where you are. You can find groups that remove invasives, do outplantings, do outreach, etc. You can also get involved by writing to the leaders in your community and advocating for forestation. The replacement of native eucalyptus plantations in Gippsland — including Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans), Blue Gum (E. globulus), and Shining Gum (E. nitens) — with exotic Pine plantations (Pinus radiata) poses significant and well-documented ecological risks. Conversion to pine results in the loss of native plant communities that support complex pollination networks, soil fungi, and rare or threatened flora such as the critically endangered Slender Tree-fern (Cyathea cunninghamii) and Butterfly Orchid (Sarcochilus australis). Native eucalypt systems maintain structural and functional diversity that supports a broad range of wildlife - including the Lyrebird. In contrast, P. radiata plantations exhibit low understorey diversity and provide limited habitat for species of conservation concern, including the Powerful Owl (Ninox strenua) and Gang-gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum). Pine plantations also degrade soil health, reduce microbial diversity, and can lower streamflow by up to 40%, increasing landscape drying and fire risk. Their uniform fuel structure contributes to higher-intensity bushfires and poses severe threats to adjacent Cool Temperate Rainforest communities. Additionally, P. radiata is recognised as an environmental weed in Victoria, spreading into adjacent native vegetation and inhibiting regeneration of native flora. Using Arthur Rylah Institute ranking, pines are South Gippsland’s third most threatening weed, worse than Blackberry and Ragwort. The cumulative impacts of replacing native species plantations with pines undermine biodiversity, ecosystem function, and landscape resilience - and leaves no place for Toto! Logging these great forests makes the climate crisis worse and is pushing our native wildlife to the brink of extinction. Koalas are a protected species, but unfortunately most of their habitat is not. Next to habitat destruction; car strikes, dog attacks, and chlamydia are the next biggest threats to koalas. (Dissanayake et al., Sci Rep. 2023)We don’t want to see this iconic Australian species become extinct. Here a just a few things you can do to help save the koala: - Be loud for wildlife, this includes not only koalas, but the pollinators of their home trees. Did you know koalas depend on flying foxes, as flying foxes are major pollinators of eucalypt forests! - March to protect forests, vote for those protecting native forests, and sign petitions in favour of protecting eucalypt habitat. - Join your local bush regen group or wildlife rescue group. - Keep your dogs supervised, and on lead specifically in koala areas. - Slow down on roads. #koala #australianwildlife #australiananimals #protectnativeforests
