NYThis June, New Yorkers will use Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) to vote for Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough President, and City Council.
With RCV, voters have the chance to rank up to five candidates in order of preference instead of choosing just one.
Since primary election season is heating up, let’s break down how Ranked Choice ballots are counted!
1️⃣ All 1st choice votes are counted. If a candidate receives more than 50% of votes, they win.
2️⃣ If no candidate earns more than 50% of 1st choice votes, then counting will continue in rounds.
3️⃣ Each round, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. If your highest-ranked candidate is eliminated, your vote goes to the next highest ranked candidate on your ballot.
4️⃣ This process continues until there are only 2 candidates left. The candidate with the most votes wins!
