DAYou know that saying: you don’t know what you have until it’s gone? Yea I didn’t know who I was or what I accomplished until recently.
Long delayed goodbye and tip off to my time in track. Processing takes time, and I wish I could say I’ve processed it all in the last what 4 years since I walked away but I haven’t… I’ve just now started to realize who I once was.
In middle school I ran track to hang out with friends, and it quickly wasn’t just for fun. I was recruited by the high schools and before I knew it I landed in private school.
In high school I was amongst the nations leading times, and fighting for the national record. Beating olympians records to that of Gail Devers. But I never understood track, I was never fully invested in the who’s who, or to the full knowledge of the events even. It was never my sport honestly; I ran because I was good, not for the loved of it (sorry?). Winning is fun and that’s what kept me going for as long as I did…
My own internal battles refused to let me believe that I was good. It was never a perfect race and there was always more I could’ve done. Thus the times meant nothing to me really, not to mention I didn’t understand them all that much anyways.
Colleges were watching from the start. The faster I ran the more they watched, and the more I wanted to run away from the sport entirely. I wanted to be “normal” and just ride horses and bikes. I rebelled in a way, and boy did it show academically. I was lost in a time when one finds themself - I was forced to be someone I simply didn’t want to be.
Running hurt and I’m lazy let me tell you. But I ran through injuries and by graduation time my flat feet and grades caught up with me. I had letters from just about every college in the nation but it wasn’t happening. So I quite literally crutched myself into local community college in August after graduation and enrolled because going to college is “the right thing to do” and this coach was so persistent it might still work out.

ROBody positioning seems like a simple skill, yet, as a full time coach I can share that over 80% of the crashes I see are caused by body positioning mistakes.
In fact, one of the most common errors on roll-downs (and in steep downhills) is the still-commonly-given bro tip:
Just move back! 🙄
Don’t get me wrong:
YES the bike needs to move forward into the steep, so you DO want to be behind the saddle during the roll-down/steep downhill, BUT you want to gently guide the bike forward in CONTROL.
Why will this give us control?
When we stay balanced & stable through the feet with our center of mass over the bottom bracket - and move the bike beneath us - we generate traction and direction, which gives the system stability.
How do we do that?
✅ Stay evenly and heavily planted through the feet and use arms and legs as natural suspension
➡️ The body (the heavy mass) STAYS balanced, while the bike (the light mass) moves.
Why not to move back?
Once you move back and hang off your bars, the bike will take control - you (the heavy mass) will be pulled forward, which takes traction (and direction) off the front tire and can cause a “catapult effect” whereby the bike “spits” the body forward and can even send you over the bars 🤕
⚠️The more advanced the rider and the more technical the terrain, the more important TINY nuances in body positioning become.
