THWhat’s that hole on the side of slugs? This is how a slug breathes! All land slugs have a pneumostome (say it with me: new-mah-stome) on the right side of their mantle!
Oxygen enters through this opening and moves inside the hollow cavity (called a pallial cavity) where gas exchange takes place. This entire system is also called a pallial lung.
Certain marine and freshwater species, lack a pneumostome and instead use gills for respiration. Land slugs evolved to live in terrestrial or semi-aquatic environments, making the lung essential for air-breathing.

MEAh the banana slug. A slimy creature often found sliding across the forest floor of northern California. This small fellow decided this was the day to climb the ladder. He made his way up the tree bark leaving a slimy trail in his wake. Feasting on lichen and fungus as he climbed he continued up...up...up. And despite getting tangled in a spiderweb, he slimed on.
With the budget cuts to science as of late, work has been slow in the natural history realm. Projects getting cancelled or put off, ideas slipping by due to lack of funding, the conservation world has taken a hit. Yet we slime on.
Money shouldn't be what dictates whether or not a project receives educational outreach. If you or someone you know is in need of science communication services but is lacking funding please have them reach out to me. I am donating my time and will work at cost for a select few projects. NADid you know that Banana Slugs have 2 sets of tentacles? The larger upper set contains its eyes which can move independently of each other. The bottom set are for smelling and feeling, and are used to help the slug find food, which can be almost anything, and getting the food into its mouth.
Check out this banana slug’s tentacles in action and watch to the end to see it quickly pull them in as it senses possible danger.

RAWhen you finally see the UK’s most colourful species… the Rainbow Sea Slug 💫 🌈 I can’t quite explain how excited I was to finally spot this species, I think I squealed quite a lot! We were just getting in, I had one flipper on and was still getting ready when I suddenly spotted those insanely bright colours. I quickly scrambled to get my mask on, and spent a lot of time watching this stunning species. I think you can guess what species I’ll be painting next 🌈
