WHYou know, of course, I always start by defending my rights, but this ended up being such a beautiful interaction—completely set up by the Lord. After that conversation, I ended up talking with another police officer who was very harsh at first and didn’t want me to pray for him. Yet we ended up talking for about 35 minutes about God, and I was able to witness to him. The Lord was breaking down his walls through me. By the end, he allowed me to pray for him, and it was just so beautiful.
I didn’t even preach again because I didn’t feel led to. When they stopped me, it was actually about the right time to wrap it up anyway. That place was not only physically quiet with very few people around, but it was also spiritually dead.
Right before that, though, I preached for the first time that night, and a girl ran out of the club and gave her heart to the Lord. What this whole situation turned into was totally unexpected. After I stood up for myself, they literally said, “Yeah, we can’t shut you down—you’re right,” and only asked me to turn it down. Even that was unbelievable because the clubs were blasting music and live bands were playing. It was so loud you could barely hear me.
What stood out most was that the Beale Street manager initially came after me and told me I had to shut it down and leave, but later admitted that he allows the Hebrew Israelites to preach and simply asks them to turn it down. That’s how you know there is power in the gospel—it was breaking ground. @bealestreetmemphis

I watched Saved! with pretty low expectations, but I ended up genuinely enjoying it. I laughed a lot, yet at the same time the film kept poking at something uncomfortable and very real. What makes it interesting is that many of the things I found funny are still considered “normal” or even untouchable taboos by a lot of people today. That contrast is what stayed with me after the movie ended.
Behind its comedy, Saved! clearly criticizes how religion is often used in backward or closed-minded societies, not as a moral guide, but as a tool for personal interest, control, and exclusion. Using belief systems to limit certain groups or define who is “acceptable” and who isn’t is honestly frustrating and disturbing. These themes go much deeper than what I want to fully unpack right now, so I prefer to leave them at a surface level for the moment.
I also think the film has some truly iconic characters, each exaggerated just enough to make the point without losing the humor. And honestly, the female lead feels like she could be the unofficial inspiration for Bella from Twilight, the resemblance of her characterization is hard to ignore.
