COThe US is increasingly coming to terms with the fact that its global hegemony is fading. In the Senate in Washington, DC, scenes unfolded where two maps were compared, measuring Chinese diplomatic presence against that of the United States. The result was self-explanatory.
The era of supposed inevitability in global markets and geopolitics is over, and aggressive US foreign policy no longer comes without consequences. More and more countries are turning toward the emerging economic power centered in Beijing. Even parts of the Western Hemisphere, historically tightly bound to the US, are openly talking about a break with Washington.
At the last World Economic Forum in Davos, clear ruptures were on display. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney admitted the international “rules-based order” was a fiction the West collectively agreed on because it benefited from it. Carney added that this is now set to change radically, as Washington is even turning against its own allies.
