The answer everyone has been waiting for... No, 120 bpm is not a dangerously high heart rate. However, it /can/ warrant an alert. My medical alert service dog has gone through years of training to reliably detect the scent of hormones changing in my body in all sorts of environments. A huge pro of training a medical alert task is to catch a medical episode in its early stages. I become symptomatic around 130 bpm, so Mars alerts me before that stress is put on my body. Mars also is able to do response tasks that can assist with regulating my system and preventing my symptoms from becoming severe. Having a service dog has been a great tool in managing my disabilities. Medical alerts allow me to pace myself before its too late, leaving me to deal with the fallout. Especially with a dynamic disability (when symptom severity and triggers can vary from day to day), knowing a medical episode is coming before it does is invaluable information. 🚨Bonus!! This is what proper ADA training looks like in real life. Today, I took my service dog in training to the aquarium. Staff asked the two legal questions calmly and respectfully. They didn’t ask for paperwork. They didn’t demand to know my diagnosis. They didn’t try to test my dog. They weren’t rude, sarcastic, or suspicious. They verified what they’re legally allowed to verify, and then we moved on. It is not hard to be educated on the ADA. It is not hard to train staff on what they can and cannot ask. And it is absolutely possible to protect access laws without harassing disabled handlers in the process. When businesses take the time to actually understand the law, interactions don’t turn into confrontations. They don’t become interrogations. They stay professional. This is the standard. This is Denver’s second session of learning how to find an empty chair for his handler and he put all his effort into the task - but imagine if this had been in public?! Total fail. That’s why I like to train all my skills at home first before generalizing to new locations. 👍😅 I still give him an A+ for effort. I am constantly asked “how am I able to travel with Magnus?” or “how is he so well behaved in public places that are filled with distractions?” This video shows the FIRST time that Magnus flew on an airplane. We were taking a flight from New York to California; not an easy task especially since we were flying out of JFK International airport in NYC which is ALWAYS extremely crowded and very chaotic. The reason Magnus is allowed to fly with me in the main cabin is because he is not only a certified therapy dog, but he is also my task trained service dog. If you notice in the video Magnus is ALWAYS locked on me, ignoring EVERYTHING around him. This is due to the way I trained him. He knows when its time to be a be goofy, run around and do zoomies, but also when it’s time to be laser focused and pay attention to me, and only me. In these stores, there's also sometimes residual glass from spills etc. Do you want to walk in a store in bare feet? My first walk with my service puppy! One day last week everything changed in the best way possible, Pamina came home. She is so full of personality and love! Pamina and I even went on our first walk together! With my hypokalemic periodic paralysis, my biggest trigger is the cold. One thing you can always count on is that November in Michigan can be cold, but I felt like I was dreaming when we were able to sneak a few steps in before the snow and cold hit. After the snow and cold hit, there’s no guarantee that I’ll be doing much walking outside until it warms up(although I have a dream of getting a few steps in with both Piper and Pamina). Pamina has already learned about walkers, wheelchairs, and forearm crutches. She is learning to walk next to people walking without mobility aids, walking with mobility aids, and next to me in my wheelchair. 98% of the time I use my wheelchair to get around, but since my disability is ever changing it is important for her to grow up learning about all of these different ways a person can move through the world. Pamina loves her wheelchair rides! She relaxes, sits very still, and enjoys the ride on my lap while I roll wherever I’m going! How are my service dog, Piper and Pamina doing? Well, I’m not sure he’s ever been happier! He is loving being a big brother. They play together, nap together, Piper has been teaching Pamina how to be a good citizen, and they are just loving life together! They are the happiest little pair!
