CSComedian Jon Stewart pressed Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks on the Pentagon’s budget, saying more money needs to go towards service members and veterans instead of defense contractors.
“We got out of 20 years of war and the Pentagon got a $50 billion raise. That’s shocking to me,” Mr. Stewart said Thursday at the War Horse Symposium in Chicago. “I can’t figure out how $850 billion to a department means that the rank and file still have to be on food stamps. To me, that’s fucking corruption.”
Deputy Secretary Hicks, the second-highest ranking official in the Defense Department, acknowledged problems in the past, but said the Pentagon was making improvements and noted recent pay increases for troops and greater allowances as well as improvements to VA care.
“We definitely think we need to increase the spending that we are putting forward toward our service members and their families,” she said. “We do think we’re getting better on that.”
