I usually use a 5-cell blocker, but this one made the process so much faster. It punched out a full tray of perfect little blocks in a fraction of the time. Confused about what soil block size to start your seeds in? It all comes down to the size of the seed. Tiny seeds = mini soil blocks. Medium & Large seeds = regular soil blocks. Exception: Some plants (like peppers and tomatoes) can easily be started in the mini because the seeds are tiny. However, they will need transplanted into the regular molds at some point because their roots will need more space. You can start them initially in the mini blocks and nest them into the regular blocks (that’s what I do to save space initially, space is always at a premium!) Or, start them straight away in the regular sized blocks. I have everything you need to get started with soil blocking linked on my Amazon storefront, link in bio. There are so many advantages of soil blocking. But often times people give up because they aren’t able to get those perfect blocks that hold their shape and hold up to watering. The moisture content of your seed starting mix is more important than the recipe of your mix itself. Too much water, they won’t stay in the blocker and actually form blocks. Too little water, the blocks will swell and fall apart when you bottom water your trays. The perfect amount of water is the key to getting perfect blocks every time. There’s a learning curve. If you’ve tried and failed…try again. And if you’ve never tried it…what are you waiting for??🌿 My blockers can be found in my “Amazon Favorites” in the link in my profile. Soil Blocking Video - Part 1. Today I’m sharing how I grow my own organic seedlings at home using a PLASTIC FREE & CONTAINER FREE technique called SOIL BLOCKING - essentially growing seedlings in just a block of soil. 🙌 If you’d like to know the exact soil blocker that I use, please comment the word TOOL and I’ll send you the link. About My Soil Blocker: 👇 The device I use creates 2”x2” molds of my soil, and I find this size perfect for growing all of my seedlings. I’ve seen some people start with smaller soil blocks (1”x1”) and then transplant them into larger blocks but I find that to be too much work. If you’re a market gardener growing lots of seedlings, then the smaller blocks may make sense for you. PRO TIPS/ TROUBLESHOOTING: 🌿 I recommend starting with a soil mix that’s very, very moist (more wet than the mix you normally use for seed starting in containers). This is because soil blocks are open on all sides and do tend to dry out quickly. Glistening wet soil is ideal. 🌿 To prevent your blocks from crumbling, make sure that you pack in the soil very tightly into the soil blocker. This will prevent your blocks from crumbling or disintegrating. I’ll be filming Part 2 which will talk about heat mats, grow lights, watering, fertilizing etc. Please let me know if you have any questions and I’ll try to answer them the best I can in upcoming videos. I start my zinnias in soil balls. It’s the same idea as soil blocking but I don’t use a blocker, I just form the “blocks” by hand and they turn out as balls. I mix my seed starting soil with water until it’s quite wet, form it into a little soil “snow ball”, and make an indent in the top. When I have a tray full of soil balls (leaving a space in the middle of the tray where I can pour water in), I put a seed in each indentation and cover it with a bit of soil. When they are a few weeks old, the zinnias are able to be transplanted with minimal damage to their root systems, making for happy plants and a happy me! #seedstarting, #soilblocks, #soilblocking, #zinniaseeds, #seedlings, #spring, #springflowers
