_BHere's a songwriting tip I learned from legendary hitmaker Steve Kipner.
Steve, who wrote pop classics like "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera, "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John, and "These Words" by Natasha Bedingfield, has this cool trick where he builds a great verse, pre-chorus, and chorus system.
But for the second system, he skips the pre-chorus entirely and goes straight to the chorus, creating a subtle yet powerful shift and a kind of warp-speed jump directly to the chorus that keeps listeners hooked.
The brain expects a pre-chorus, but when it doesn't arrive, the surprise adds energy and momentum to the song.
As songwriters, we've got to keep learning from the greats. Steve is one of the few writers I know with hits from the early 70s through the 2020s. Incredible, right? How's that possible, even?
On a personal note, my first publishing hit was with Steve: "Invisible Man" by 98 Degrees.

Nelle mie sessioni metto la mia esperienza al servizio di chi vuole acquisire/migliorare la propria scrittura, ma sempre avendo grande senso di rispetto e responsabilità per chi ho al mio fianco, perché non dimentichiamoci che l’arte nasce da dentro, e si amplifica con anima e cuore.
Per qualcuno sarò un nostalgico, un sognatore o altro, ma posso dirvi semplicemente che vivo la scrittura di canzoni come l’emozione che trasmette emozione. Oggi sono con @giuliapedrottiii 🎙️, per me un vero talento sia nel canto che nel songwriting, e con lei l’approccio è quello che amo di più: armonia ed improvvisazione sulle linee melodiche con il solito “fake English”, e con lei nascono sempre idee molto particolari.
