A colossal moment in deep-sea discovery! 🦑 While exploring the depths of the #SouthSandwichIslands in search of new species, our expedition team spotted something truly extraordinary… 🎥 The team were able to film a juvenile colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni). This is the first time EVER a colossal squid has been recorded in its natural environment. 🤯🤩 This incredible footage has been released today by @schmidtocean, partners with Ocean Census and Go South on the South Sandwich Islands expedition, and members of the Ocean Census Alliance. Even more fitting? This flapjack octopus lives 55 nautical miles west of West Shag Rocks. It is several days by ship from Punta Arenas, Chile — an essential gateway for maritime traffic between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, particularly for vessels navigating around the South American continent, according to the World Ports Directory. This rocky bank lies in the high seas, near South Georgia Island. On a Google map, the text obscures this tiny dot of a place, surrounded by blue. In March of 2025, the closest people to the crew and scientists on Research Vessel Falkor (too) were orbiting the Earth on the International Space Station. Beneath the surface, as ROV SuBastian flew over the seafloor, a steady stream of marine snow rained down. On every bit of rock, deep-sea corals fanned out, intricate glass sponges towered, and pink anemones waved. The occasional wide-eyed fish lurked — each outpost, a different, densely packed neighborhood. Hop-floating between these seafloor oases, Opisthoteuthis sp. — a genus of cirrate octopuses found throughout the global Ocean — use cirri running up and down their arms like fingers for foraging around in the fluffy sediment. Small worms, crustaceans, and other invertebrates keep these adorable cephalopods fueled for life in a rocky benthic metropolis. Scientists collected this footage during the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition at 902 meters.
