Firstly if you look at all 257 municipalities, 71% of their total #income in 2020 was self-generated. The remaining share (29%) was from #government #grants and subsidies, as well as from donations and contributions According to #StatsSA, South Africa’s eight largest cities dominate the municipal #financial landscape, accounting for almost 60% of total municipal income. These urban centres generate a large proportion of their own income, skewing the national picture. Lets take the year 2020 In 2020, metros self-generated 81% of their income, compared with 28% recorded by rural municipalities. [EXPLAINER] South Africa’s labour market faces a paradox as the latest @statssa Quarterly Employment Statistics show a drop of 80,000 jobs in the formal non-agricultural sector for Q2 2025, with total employment falling to 10.5 million. Job losses were concentrated in community services, trade and manufacturing, while earnings continued to rise, with average monthly pay increasing 3.4% to R29,290, driven mainly by higher basic salaries.  The figures highlight ongoing challenges for economic growth and job creation amid policy uncertainty and global pressures.
