Matsubara recorded the song at just 19. Two years earlier, she had relocated from Osaka to Tokyo, honing her craft through club performances around the city. Composer Tetsuji Hayashi shaped the track in the then-rising “new music” style drawing heavily from Western pop and soul a sound that would later be recognized as city pop.
The repeated English hook, “Stay with me,” was highlighted by Billboard for its immediate appeal to non-Japanese listeners, underscoring the song’s cross-cultural pull.
