If I could sit with my 45-year-old self, just as perimenopause was beginning, this is what I would tell her. Take responsibility for your own health. No one is coming to do this for you. Perimenopause doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Changes in sleep, mood, energy, body composition and anxiety matter. They’re signals your body is trying to communicate. This is the decade where muscle loss, bone loss and metabolic changes accelerate. Strength training becomes non-negotiable. Muscle protects your bones, metabolism, hormones and independence. Perimenopause is not the time to restrict. Nourish your body properly. Protein, fibre and healthy fats support blood sugar, hormones and energy. Your heart health matters. Keep your cardio. Choose movement that gets your heart rate up, you enjoy, can recover from and repeat. Not extremes that leave you exhausted. Rest and recovery matter. Poor sleep and chronic stress raise cortisol and slow progress. Protect your sleep like it’s medicine. Walk daily. Build routines you can sustain. Consistency beats perfection every time. At 55, post-menopause, I feel stronger and more grounded than I did in my 40s. Perimenopause wasn’t decline. It was the invitation to take my health seriously. Most women are not bad at front lunges. They’re just accidentally walking on a tightrope. One of the most common mistakes I see is stepping forward with the feet in one straight line. When your feet land like this, your balance becomes unstable and the movement turns into a struggle instead of a strength exercise. In this video I show the mistake first — then the fix. Instead of stepping on a tightrope, think about your feet moving on railroad tracks. Two parallel lines. 1. Start with your feet about hip-width apart 2. Step forward on the same line as your starting foot 3. Add a small hip hinge as you lower into the lunge This creates a stable base, improves balance, and lets your hips and glutes actually do the work. Strength training isn’t about doing harder exercises. It’s about learning the small positioning details that make the fundamentals work.
