SIAgents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have been deployed to major U.S. airports to assist Transportation Security Administration officers during the ongoing partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
The shutdown has forced TSA officers to work without pay for weeks, contributing to staffing shortages and long security lines at airports across the United States.
NBC News confirmed the presence of ICE and DHS personnel at several airports, including Hartsfield‑Jackson Atlanta International Airport, O'Hare International Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport.
At O’Hare Airport’s Terminal 3, armed DHS officers were seen near the walkway connecting the secured area with the general terminal. Officials said ICE agents were helping with security but were not checking passengers’ identification as they passed.
A senior ICE official said at least 50 ICE officers and agents will be deployed per shift at each airport. They are not trained to operate screening equipment, such as magnetometers or X-ray machines, that TSA officers normally operate.
Instead, ICE personnel are assisting with crowd control, monitoring security lines and checking identification before passengers reach screening checkpoints.
The deployment comes as TSA absentee rates continue rising. According to DHS, the national call-out rate reached 11.76% on Sunday.
Some airports reported far higher absence levels, including Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport at 42.3%, Hartsfield‑Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 41.5%, and John F. Kennedy International Airport at 37.4%.
Passengers across the country have reported waiting up to three hours to pass through airport security lines.
White House border adviser Tom Homan said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that ICE agents would be deployed first to airports experiencing the longest delays.
President Donald Trump later said the deployment was his idea and stated that ICE would do the job “far better than ever done before.” He also warned that the National Guard could be sent to airports if the situation worsens.
