ABTerry Fox was a 21-year-old Canadian who lost his right leg to osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) in 1977. While in the hospital, he was deeply moved by the suffering of other cancer patients, especially children, and became determined to make a difference.
In April 1980, he began his “Marathon of Hope”, dipping his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s with the goal of running across Canada and raising $1 from every Canadian for cancer research. Running nearly a marathon a day, he pushed through pain, injuries, and harsh weather, gaining national attention and inspiring millions along the way.
After 143 days and over 3,300 miles, Fox was forced to stop near Thunder Bay when the cancer returned and spread to his lungs. Although he never finished the run, his story captured the nation. Donations surged, and by early 1981, he had reached his goal of raising $24 million.
Fox passed away on June 28, 1981, but his legacy only grew stronger. The annual Terry Fox Run, held in dozens of countries, has since raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research worldwide, making him one of the most influential figures in the fight against cancer.
