From Global Prestige ( Imperial Iran ) to Diplomatic Decay ( Islamic Republic )
On one side, Hossein Ala: The gold standard of Imperial Iranian statesmanship. A product of the University of London and Westminster, Ala was more than a diplomat; he was a titan of Western-educated brilliance who commanded the world’s respect with “impeccable English” and an “unfaltering Oxford accent”.
His greatest moment came in 1946 at the UN Security Council, where he stood as the supreme defender of Iran’s soil against Soviet aggression. Addressing the “supreme tribunal of humanity,” he boldly declared:
“The Soviet government is making the evacuation of Iran dependent on the acceptance... of certain demands, whereas the withdrawal of foreign allied forces... has always been considered unconditional.”
Because of his wit and eloquence, the Red Army was forced to retreat without a single shot fired. He brought “new prestige to Iran, demolishing prejudice and augmenting Iran’s influence in world affairs”.
On the other side, Amir Saeid Iravani: A representative of the current era. Educated regionally in Bhopal and Tehran, he stands as a symbol of a regime that often operates through shadows and security apparatuses rather than high-level global statecraft. While one man built a bridge to the world’s most elite circles, the other reflects a shift toward isolation and “ideological defiance”.

POThere’s an American double standard, but there’s also a British one. Specifically, when it comes to buying Russian oil. Everyone’s doing it, it seems, but India is being “singled out.” Those were the exact words Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal used in a roundtable discussion on trade, highlighting how London and Berlin had already resolved their energy issues, with US approval no less.
UK Trade Minister Chris Bryant insisted it was all a big misunderstanding, and that the UK actually buys oil through a subsidiary of Russian oil company Rosneft, which makes it ok. Goyal’s assertion that India has Rosneft subsidiaries too did not seem to win over Bryant, mostly because British politicians only have a passing acquaintance with reality.

SACome work from The Library Lounge at The Standard hotel in King’s Cross with me ☕ This is episode two of my series where I try out laptop-friendly coffee shops in London and share honest reviews.
I’m self-employed and always looking for places where I can actually settle in and get things done. The lounge here is warm, cosy, and beautifully designed, with bookshelves, plants.
There are a few proper tables to work from but they were already taken when I arrived, so I ended up on a sofa with a coffee table. Not ideal for working, my back was not happy. Around midday I moved to a proper table, and once I was set up, I got loads done.
