The Galloway Hoard was discovered 10 years ago on 1 September 2014. Over the past decade, National Museums Scotland researchers have been examining its contents and carefully conserving the 105 objects that were buried together in the southwest of Scotland in AD900. Most of the hoard has been displayed in the years since its discovery, but the last object to be revealed is a silver lidded vessel. 🧵 It was found wrapped in textiles which had to be conserved carefully over many years and now the vessel has finally been unwrapped and stabilised. 🐆 The vessel contained precious and exotic objects like silk and rock crystal from faraway lands. Its surface revealed religious imagery which also suggested a central or western Asian origin. Analysis of the silver and decorative materials revealed a distant origin too... ⬛️ Now that it’s finally been unwrapped, analysis of the niello – that’s the black inlay that outlines details of the design - reveals that it originates from what is now modern-day Iran. ✨ Although vessels of similar size and shape have been used as Viking-age treasure containers, this is the only one confirmed as coming directly from the Silk Road. Now fully conserved, this unique object will be going on display for the very first time at the British Museum. ‘Silk Roads’ (26 September 2024-23 February 2025) unravels how the journeys of people, objects and ideas that formed the Silk Roads shaped cultures and histories. Visitors will be able to see this stunning vessel which once contained treasures from one of the most important UK archaeological finds of the century, and which now provides us with more clues to its origins. This is the 240-foot Admiral Yachts “Planet Nine” linked to Nat Rothschild, 5th Baron Rothschild, of the noble banking family which has been a major force in world finance for 300 years. The $85 milllion-ish expedition vessel would appear to be a drop in the bucket for Rothschild. Though his inheritance was first reported in 2000 as $500 million, The British newspaper The Observer reported that the inheritance was actually closer to $40 billion, and locked up in internecine Swiss bank accounts. Intrigue is nothing new to this family, of course, which is one of the most whispered about clans of all time. Conspiracy theories, as we all know, abound. That’s why I thought it was interesting that Rothschild named his boat “Planet Nine” which is a reference to Planet Nine, a hypothetical dwarf planet just beyond Neptune, the existence of which has been feverishly postulated upon, but never proven with concrete evidence. If that is the actual inspiration for this yacht’s name, then the Yacht Fella awards you extra points for creativity, Nat. Rothschild’s yachting activities have not been without controversy. In 2008 it was widely reported that a British politician and a Russian aluminum tycoon had met aboard one of the Baron’s yachts in Greece (not Planet 9), allegations of influence peddling followed. In 2012 Rothschild lost a libel case he brought against The Daily Mail, which had labeled him a “puppet master” after he took another trip to Siberia with the same British politician. SAVE & SHARE this list! 🚗 ✈️ 🛳️⁣ ⁣ We recently took a summer vacation and wanted to share some of our favourite items we brought along with us!⁣ ⁣ Part 1 includes small items that are great for the car or airplane! ⁣ ⁣ 🎒 What’s in our backpack:⁣ ⁣ ✍️ LCD Writing Tablet - this has been a hit since day one!⁣ ⁣ 🖍️ Mini Art Set - includes a small paper pad, stickers, and mini washable markers.⁣ ⁣ 📚 Reading materials - National Geographic Little Kids (a subscription we have had for years which was gifted to our oldest) and The Adventures of Sophie Mouse (a chapter book series the girls are absolutely obsessed with!)⁣ ⁣ 🎶 Yoto Player & Cards - to listen to music and stories. We love having this while away for Yoto Daily. IYKYK! There is also a Yoto Mini version which would be ideal for on-the-go.⁣ ⁣ 🚙 Two-Seater Speedstar Car - fun for pretend play (from The Observer Pay Kit @lovevery).⁣ ⁣ 🙌🏼 Pop It - to keep those little hands busy.⁣ ⁣ 🟪 Tegu Magnetic Wooden Blogs - handy for building and keeping blocks intact.⁣ ⁣ 🛁 Suction Pop Toys - these little guys stick to smooth surfaces and double as bath toys while away from home!⁣ ⁣ ‼️ Our favourite item for travel, which didn’t make it into this reel (because they were being used at the time of filming 🙃) is the girls’ own digital cameras!
