My tracheostomy’s pilot balloon had broken off while in the ICU! (I’ll post about why I was there later) The pilot balloon is used to inflate the balloon that is attached to the trach inside the airways so air cannot travel up into the nose and mouth. This is so that ventilated air can push air only into the lungs. This is only in cuffed trachs, which I have because I need a ventilator to breathe for me every night and many days. Thankfully I had deflated the balloon BEFORE it broke, otherwise it wouldn’t have been able to come out. Disease progression—much sooner than expected. A Trach has entered my surgical plans. I am now on bipap all day for as long as possible. But that comes with complications. Skin breakdown and skin sensitivity is one of them. Any mask causes pressure to some extent and in turn I get rashes and breakdown/sores. The next is aerophagia. This occurs because the bipap goes through your mouth and/or nose. But since it’s not directly in your airway, some air goes into your GI system. I already have many GI issues—the most prominent being my colon doesn’t move. This is very uncomfortable. So a trach would bypass all of that. But there are downsides too. At first I didn’t want one at all, but now, after wearing this awful mask, it seems like a step forward and away from discomfort. 🛑I will warn you THIS IS HARD TO WATCH! 🛑 But I share this because I needed this type of education and reinforcement when I was new to this. We have HIGH anxiety when it comes to trach changes ever since she had a very traumatic experience with an accidental decanulation with a night nurse. We have tried laying down, standing up, asleep, all the tricks but nothing works. So now, we do these things and she stays safe, it gets changed, and she recovers quickly. These tips may not work for everyone but they’ve worked for us, so we wanted to pass them on. Having a super skilled and calm nurse is a definite plus! We’d be so lost without our *bonus mom/nurse*, so find someone you trust and can learn with. Communication and teamwork at its highest level, saving your child’s life. If you have any questions or would like to talk through your anxious trachies process, please message me! I’m here to help! They said he wouldn’t see, wouldn’t hear, wouldn’t walk, wouldn’t talk, wouldn’t understand, that he would need a trach, and that he would never, could never, ever, ever, again. When someone is in the middle of the worst moment of their life, they hear everything. Every doubt, every limit, every fear. And sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for the people we love is silence that noise, and give them the grace and space to become whomever they’re fighting to be. Judah chose to fight. For 15 more months, he smiled. He ate. He responded. He saw. He understood. He rolled. He sat up unassisted. He lived louder than every prediction placed on him. I have never learned more about life than I learned from a baby. At your lowest… you fight. When they doubt you… you fight. When the odds say no… you fight anyway. You are bigger than the statistic. Louder than the noise. Seasons change. People aren’t assigned to us forever. But what they leave in us, that stays.
