Before BJJ spread across the world, Judo was already doing it. 🌍 In this story, legendary coach John Danaher explains how Japanese judoka helped introduce grappling to the world in the early days. @danaherjohn As Japan expanded internationally in the early 1900s, many soldiers and travelers carried their martial art with them. The stories say they would walk into bars, challenge locals, hand them a jacket… and say: “You can do anything you want. I’m just going to try to throw you.” Most people had never felt real grappling before, and when they did, they wanted to learn. Moments like these helped spread the roots of modern grappling across the globe… eventually leading to the rise of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. #bjj #jiujitsu #judo #grappling #martialarts

It’s not that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) “sucks” at throws—it’s just that the sport prioritizes different skills than Judo. In Judo, throwing is the core goal. Training is built around: • Clean, explosive throws • Timing, balance (kuzushi), and grip fighting • Winning instantly with an ippon (full throw) So judoka spend a huge amount of time perfecting stand-up techniques like hip throws, foot sweeps, and sacrifices. In BJJ, the focus is different: • The goal is to submit your opponent on the ground • Standing exchanges are just a way to get to the ground • Many BJJ schools don’t train throws as intensely or as frequently That said: • Some BJJ practitioners have excellent takedowns—especially those with wrestling or judo backgrounds • At higher levels, BJJ competitors do train takedowns, because getting taken down or pulling guard safely matters a lot • The rule sets differ: in BJJ, you can pull guard and still compete effectively, which reduces the reliance on throws So a better way to put it is: • Judo = specialized in throwing • BJJ = specialized in ground fighting If you put a high-level judoka and a typical BJJ athlete in a standing exchange, the judoka usually has the advantage in throws. But once the fight hits the ground, the BJJ athlete often has the edge. If you want, I can break down how to make your throws work better specifically in BJJ matches.

Where Judo shines • Takedowns and throws: Judo athletes are usually way more explosive on the feet. A clean throw can end a fight fast. • Balance and grip fighting: Judokas spend tons of time learning how to control posture and grips. • Stand-up dominance: In a real fight or MMA exchange, being able to put someone on the ground hard is huge. Where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu shines • Ground control and submissions: BJJ specializes in finishing fights once you’re already on the ground. • Guard work: Fighting effectively from your back is something BJJ develops deeply. • Longer ground exchanges: More techniques for sweeps, transitions, and positional control. Reality check Historically, BJJ actually came from Judo. Early Brazilian practitioners learned from Mitsuyo Maeda, a judo expert from the Kodokan. In modern combat sports In places like the Ultimate Fighting Championship: • Fighters with Judo backgrounds usually have strong takedowns and clinch throws. • Fighters with BJJ backgrounds usually dominate submissions. A lot of elite fighters train both, because they complement each other perfectly. My hot take: If a pure judoka fights a pure BJJ player: • Standing: Judo advantage • Ground: BJJ advantage Since you asked before about Judo vs BJJ takedowns, I’m curious — do you train Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or are you just watching the sport? 🥋

Judo vs Jujitsu same roots, different paths 🥋 It all started with Jigoro Kano, who saw a problem… Jujutsu was powerful, but it was just a collection of techniques. No clear principle. No unifying idea. So he changed everything. ➡️ Judo became a system built on one core concept: maximum efficiency, minimum effort (精力善用) It wasn’t just about fighting anymore it became a method of learning, growing, and improving. Meanwhile, Jujitsu evolved in its own direction, focusing more on ground fighting, control, and submissions. ⚖️ Same origin 🔥 Different philosophy 🥋 Different expression #judo #jiujitsu #bjj #martialarts #judô
