FAQ#20 How do they know you planted them and not just tossed them? Do they go check every one? A certain amount of trees is allocated for a certain piece of land that they give you. For example, they can give me a 2 hectare land at 2500/hectare, so if I finish the land with something not close to 5000 trees, something won’t add up. As for tossing them, it would take as much if not more energy to plant them, so no reason to do such a thing. For checking, they take multiple random samples through you land, and are able to not only verify the quality of my trees, but calculate an approximate density for the entire land. If the latter is not respected, I’ll have to go back and correct them, which I won’t be paid for. You’ll see me talk more and more about the relationship between fitness, money, and trees and how they intertwine in a unique way in the tree planting business. These 3 pillars are like a 3 leg stool; you need all of them to make the thing work. Personally, I plant mostly for the fitness aspect of it, as it keeps me in shape while doing something I love. The money is just a side effect of the fitness/grind. This is what keeps planters coming back year after year; you can just show up, focus and work hard, and both your financial and fitness problems will be dealt with. Pretty sweet. The first week is a good ice-breaker to the season. We are happy with the results, but we’ll be looking to up these numbers in the upcoming week. Exciting news: last week, the Cumberland River Compact completed its largest mine land reforestation project to date in collaboration with Green Forests Work! A total of 108,800 seedlings (a mix of 22 native species) were planted across a 169-acre site near Hazard, Kentucky. The incredibly talented Williams Forestry crew planted the entire area in just three days. 💪 This land was once used for surface mining, which left the soil heavily compacted from years of machinery use. Before planting, the site was cross-ripped to loosen the soil and invasive plants were removed, creating better conditions for large trees to survive. Species planted include white oak, shortleaf pine, black cherry, red maple, and silky dogwood, all selected to recreate the type of forest that existed here before mining. In addition to the trees, 775 pounds of native grass and wildflower seed (19 species total) were spread across the site, including purple coneflower, little bluestem, milkweed, and coreopsis. These prairie plants will provide food and shelter for birds, mammals, and pollinators in Kentucky. Their deep roots will also stabilize the soil and prevent erosion while the trees establish. 🌼 As this forest grows, it will benefit the people, wildlife, streams, and rivers of eastern Kentucky. Every forest restored creates cleaner air, cleaner water, cooler temperatures, and more wildlife habitat.
